Background: Topoisomerase IIα (TOP2A), is an enzyme involved in DNA replication, transcription, recombination, and chromatin remodeling and is found in a variety of cancers. However, the role of TOP2A regulation in oral cancer progression is not fully explained. The novel corona virus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the disease it causes, COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019) have had multi-faceted effects on a number of lives on a global scale both directly and indirectly. A growing body of evidence suggest that COVID-19 patients experience several oral health problems such as dry mouth, mucosal blistering, mouth rash, lip necrosis, and loss of taste and smell. Periodontal disease (PD), a severe inflammatory gum disease, may worsen the symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Objectives: The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the seropositivity of the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) in a dental school patient population.

Methods: Blood was drawn on 20,844 subjects registering for treatment at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. All subjects who are admitted to the dental school are submitted to RPR screening (Macro-Vue-RPR Card, Becton Dickinson), blood indices, and serum chemistries.
