The effectiveness of ultraviolet (UV) combined with chlorine as a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) for drinking water treatment was evaluated in a bench scale study by comparing the rate of trichloroethylene (TCE) decay when using UV/chlorine to the rates of decay by UV alone and UV/hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) at various pH values. A medium pressure mercury UV lamp was used. The UV/chlorine process was more efficient than the UV/H₂O₂ process at pH 5, but in the neutral and alkaline pH range, the UV/H₂O₂ process became more efficient.

Method: A longitudinal, nationally representative survey was conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) assessed DSM-IV-TR psychiatric disorders, self-medication, and sociodemographic variables at 2 time points.
An assessment of the impact of ultraviolet (UV) reflection from inner walls is important for the accuracy of model predictions of fluence rate (FR) distribution and for the improvement of reactor efficiency. In this study, the FR distribution in an annular UV reactor with inner walls of various reflectances was measured in-situ by using a 360° response micro-fluorescent silica detector. The tests were performed in water with various transmittances ranging from 65% to 99% and with inner reactor walls composed of quartz/aluminum foil, quartz/stainless steel, or quartz/black cloth, whose reflection coefficients were determined to be 80.

This study sought to examine how user rates of individual selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) changed after the introduction of their generic equivalents.
Method: Administrative health and census data were used to examine the rates of use of all 6 SSRIs from 1996 to 2009 in the province of Manitoba (population of 1.
Objective: To examine baseline mental disorders and other correlates among people who have not previously used drugs as potential risk factors for incident drug use at 3-years' follow-up.
Method: Data came from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (commonly referred to as the NESARC) Wave 2 (2004 to 2005; n = 34 653), a longitudinal nationally representative survey of mental illness in community-dwelling adults. The study group consisted of people who reported no history of any illicit drug use or prescription drug misuse at Wave 1 (2001 to 2002).
Context: Self-medication of anxiety symptoms with alcohol, other drugs, or both has been a plausible mechanism for the co-occurrence of anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. However, owing to the cross-sectional nature of previous studies, it has remained unknown whether self-medication of anxiety symptoms is a risk factor for the development of incident substance use disorder or is a correlate of substance use.
Objective: To examine whether self-medication confers risk of comorbidity.
The plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (DC3000) is found in a wide variety of environments and must monitor and respond to various environmental signals such as the availability of iron, an essential element for bacterial growth. An important regulator of iron homeostasis is Fur (ferric uptake regulator), and here we present the first study of the Fur regulon in DC3000.

The UV response of the MFSD was systematically characterized, and the results indicated that this detector responded only to UV in the range from 210 to 280 nm. The nonlinearity was found to be less than 1% as the FR varied from 0.

Normally, grief does not need clinical intervention. However, sometimes acute grief can gain a foothold and become a chronic debilitating condition called complicated grief.

The UV/H(2)O(2) process was selected as a reference, so that the results from the UV/chlorine process could be compared with those of the UV/H(2)O(2) process. Methanol was added to active chlorine solutions at both pH 5 and 10 and into hydrogen peroxide samples.

The objective of this study was to clarify the independent effects of a range of mental illnesses and psychotropic medications on BMD among postmenopausal women.
Methods: Women 50 years or older with baseline BMD measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry were identified in a database containing all clinical dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry test results for the Province of Manitoba, Canada.
Background: Previous research has suggested a dose-response relationship between exposure to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. However, this relationship has not been examined with other Axis I mental disorders. This study examined whether the incidence of Axis I mental disorders was associated with level of exposure to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The current study is the first to examine comorbidity of PTSD and BPD in a large nationally representative sample using a reliable and valid method of assessing Axis I and II mental disorders. Data came from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) Wave II (N = 34,653; response rate 70.

Free chlorine is used widely in water and wastewater treatment and often is found in the water passing through a UV reactor. Free chlorine is degraded when passing through a UV reactor.
