This biomechanical study aimed to determine if variations in stem material, stem geometry, stem offset and cement viscosity affect mechanical resistance to postoperative periprosthetic fracture (PFF) after hip arthroplasty with a commonly used cemented polished taper-slip (PTS) stem (CPT, Zimmer Biomet) in a novel osteoporotic composite femoral bone model. Thirty-six osteoporotic composite femoral models were tested using a standardised in-vitro loading technique to simulate a typical PFF. Outcome measures were torque to failure (N), fracture energy (N/m) and rotation to failure (°).

The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is commonly injured in athletes participating in contact and overhead throwing sports. Injuries range from simple sprains to complete ligamentous disruption, and they are classified by the established Rockwood grading system. High-grade injuries are associated with fractures around the AC joint and disruption of the superior shoulder suspensory complex, a ring of osseous and ligamentous structures at the superior aspect of the shoulder.

Magnetic resonance arthrography and 3T magnetic resonance imaging of the hip are a technique commonly performed in young, physically active patients presenting with pain relating to the hip, with the focus on assessing for the presence of labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement. Abnormal signal within the labrum can be misleading, however, as labral tears are a frequent incidental finding and have been identified in a large proportion of the asymptomatic population. A range of extralabral conditions can cause hip-related pain in young patients, including pathology related to the bones, joints, and periarticular soft tissues.

Background/aims: There is still debate about the relationship between fat accumulation and mitochondrial function in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It is a critical question as only a small proportion of individuals with steatosis progress to steatohepatitis. In this study, we focused on defining (i) the effects of triglyceride accumulation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on mitochondrial function (ii) the contributions of triglyceride, ROS and subsequent mitochondrial impairment on the metabolism of energy substrates.
