Background: The authors' goal was to ascertain regenerate bone-healing metrics using quantitative histomorphometry at a single consolidation period.

Methods: Rats underwent either mandibular distraction osteogenesis (n = 7) or partially reduced fractures (n = 7); their contralateral mandibles were used as controls (n = 11). External fixators were secured and unilateral osteotomies performed, followed by either mandibular distraction osteogenesis (4 days' latency, then 0.

Background: The purpose of this study was to establish biomechanical outcomes measures to evaluate how mandibular distraction osteogenesis affects the overall quality of bone healing. Strength and functional integrity of the regenerate were determined quantitatively after unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis in comparison with the contralateral mandible and a partially reduced fracture. The authors hypothesized that the breaking load, yield, and stiffness of mandibular distraction osteogenesis would be significantly reduced in comparison with both the contralateral mandible and a partially reduced fracture.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) plays a key role in the progression of atherosclerosis and diabetes complications. The aim of this study was first, to evaluate the association between ox-LDL and diabetes duration, and second, to examine serum level of ox-LDL in patients with prolonged diabetes and a desirable LDL-cholesterol level. A total of 36 type-2 diabetic patients with a diabetes duration of more than 5 years, 36 newly diagnosed diabetic patients, and 36 age-, sex- and BMI-matched healthy participants were recruited.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has been recently established as a risk factor in the development of osteoarthritis of the hip. Intraosseous cysts are commonly seen on imaging of FAI. In most cases these cysts are incidental and do not require specific treatment at the time of surgical treatment of hip impingement.

We present 2 cases of cam/pincer combined femoroacetabular impingement treated arthroscopically with labral debridement, acetabuloplasty, and femoral head recontouring. In both cases there was essentially no evidence of osteoarthritis of the hip. However, in both cases raised exostoses were evident on the anterolateral femoral neck in the region that commonly comes into contact with the acetabular rim.

The importance of H(2)O(2) as a cellular signaling molecule has been demonstrated in a number of cell types and pathways. Here we explore a positive feedback mechanism of H(2)O(2)-mediated regulation of the phagocyte respiratory burst NADPH oxidase (NOX2). H(2)O(2) induced a dose-dependent stimulation of superoxide production in human neutrophils, as well as in K562 leukemia cells overexpressing NOX2 system components.

Many approaches have so far been tried to enhance the immunogenicity of DNA vaccine. These include the use of various factors that induce apoptosis or anti-apoptosis effects when co-delivered with DNA vaccine. In the present study, the effects of pro-apoptotic Bax encoding plasmid (pBax) and anti-apoptotic Bcl-X(L) encoding plasmid (pBcl-xl), intradermally co-injected with glycoprotein B (gB) of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)-1 encoding plasmid (pgB) into the C57BL/6 mice were evaluated.

Phage display is based on expressing peptides as a fusion to one of the phage coat proteins. To date, many vaccine researches have been conducted to display immunogenic peptides or mimotopes of various pathogens and tumors on the surface of filamentous bacteriophages. In recent years as a new approach to application of phages, recombinant bacteriophage lambda particles were used as DNA delivery vehicles to mammalian cells.

Prophylactic parenteral antibiotics have contributed to the present low rate of surgical site infections following hip and knee arthroplasty. Over the past decade, there has been a change in the pattern of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections from hospital-acquired to community-acquired. The findings of recent studies on screening programs to identify carriers of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus have been equivocal, with some studies showing that such programs reduce the rate of infections and others showing no effect on infection rates.

Several studies support the concept that, for optimum range of motion in THA, the combined femoral and acetabular anteversion should be some constant or fall within some "safe zone." When using a cementless femoral component, the surgeon has little control of the anteversion of the component since it is dictated by native femoral anteversion. Given this constraint, we asked whether the surgeon should use the native anteversion of the acetabulum as a target for implant position in THA.

The accuracy and precision of any computer-aided surgical device is critical to its utility. We asked the following question: how accurate and precise are the values measured by an imageless computer navigation system as compared with those measured using postoperative CT scans? Twenty-five patients (26 hips) underwent primary THA using an imageless computer navigation system for placement of the acetabular component. Inclination and anteversion were measured in the operative coordinate system as defined by Murray.

Posttraumatic osteoarthritis of the knee can be associated with angular deformities and alterations in the joint line as a result of the initial trauma and subsequent surgical procedures. These deformities can be characterized as extra-articular or intra-articular or can involve aspects of both. Conversion to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may require either a staged or a simultaneous corrective osteotomy to restore the limb alignment and proper knee function.

Analysis of deformity and subsequent correction are the basis for many orthopaedic surgical procedures. In advanced cases of joint degeneration, arthroplasty may be the only available treatment option. Until recently, these analyses and preoperative surgical plans have been performed using standard radiographs, tracing paper, and/or plastic overlays.

Acute morphine administration is known to alter the course of herpes simplex virus infection. In this study, the effect of acute morphine administration on the reactivation of latent herpes was investigated in a mouse model. Because of the important role of cytolytic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity in the inhibition of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) reactivation, the effect of acute morphine administration on CTL responses was also evaluated.

In this study, we examined the effect of CLA isomers in preventing age-associated muscle loss and the mechanisms underlying this effect, using 12-months-old C57BL/6 mice fed 10% corn oil (CO) or a diet supplemented with 0.5% c9t11-CLA, t10c12-CLA, or c9t11-CLA+t10c12-CLA (CLA-mix) for 6months. Both t10c12-CLA and CLA-mix groups showed significantly higher muscle mass, as compared to CO and c9t11-CLA groups, measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and muscle wet weight.

In this investigation, the influence of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on the survival of a replanted extremity subjected to prolonged warm ischaemia is evaluated. Among the relative contraindications to replantation are prolonged warm ischaemia time, since an obstruction to blood reflow ('no-reflow phenomenon') may occur in amputated parts that are subjected to more than 6h of warm ischaemia. Twenty-three rat hindlimbs were amputated and subjected to 4h of normothermic ischaemia.

Background: The role of mandibular distraction osteogenesis for reconstructing mandibular defects following radiation therapy depends on the quality of attenuated bone healing in the regenerate. This study investigated the regenerate properties after radiation therapy using yield and breaking load. The authors hypothesized that both would be significantly reduced in mandibular distraction osteogenesis following radiation therapy compared with mandibular distraction osteogenesis alone.

While many adjuvants have been discovered and used in research, only a few adjuvants have been permitted for use with human vaccination. We have previously shown that the administration of naloxone (NLX), a general opioid antagonist, during infection with a non-virulent strain of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) could enhance protection against HSV-1 challenge. Here, the adjuvant activity of NLX has been evaluated using a DNA vaccine for HSV-1 as a model.
