Background: Drug dealers and drug users resort to body stuffing to hastily conceal illicit drugs by ingesting their drug packets. This practice represents a medical challenge because rupture of the often insecure packaging can be toxic and even lethal. Introduction: There is a growing weight of evidence to suggest that myocardial contractility is an important parameter to assess as part of IND enabling studies in addition to standard assessments as per the ICH S7A and S7B guidelines. Historically, assessments of contractility have been limited to snap-shot echocardiography or single housed telemetry assessments of left ventricular pressure. There is a growing number of studies showing that social housing conditions in large animals are beneficial, do not impact the integrity of the data collected and improve animal welfare.

To evaluate whether elevated arterial free fatty acids (FFA) increase myocardial oxygen demand and ischemia, 15 fasting patients with coronary artery disease underwent a standardized atrial pacing test before (PTI) and during (PT2) heparin infusion. The patients were monitored for clinical and electrocardiographic (ECG) manifestations of ischemia. Myocardial extraction of lactate, inorganic phosphate, oxygen and FFA was measured before and during each PT.
