Background: Patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) have a poor prognosis. The standard palliative treatment for four decades has been chemotherapy as a combination of etoposide with carboplatin or cisplatin, and in recent years, immunotherapy in addition.
Aims: To determine whether there is a difference in the efficacy of palliative chemotherapy as cisplatin or carboplatin in combination with etoposide in patients with ES-SCLC in real-world practice in the Czech Republic.
Background: Quality of life and survival in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) have improved dramatically, making family planning a feasible option. Maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with CF (wwCF) are similar to those seen in the general population. However, the effect of undergoing multiple pregnancies is unknown.

Inkjet printing holds promise for this, although realizing full electrode manufacturing with this technology remains challenging. We introduce a nitrogen-doped carboxylated graphene ink (NGA-ink) compatible with commercially available printing technologies.

The visible-light-induced reactions are catalyzed by the readily available photoredox organocatalyst 4CzIPN and use inexpensive amines as reductants. Broad in scope and tolerant of multiple functional groups and heterocycles, the transformation proceeds under mild conditions.

Clinical observations revealed that NSCLC also co-opts a multifaceted immune checkpoint dysregulation as an important driving factor in NSCLC progression and development. For example, a deregulated PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway has been noticed in 50-70% of NSCLC cases, primarily modulated by mutations in key oncogenes such as ALK, EGFR, KRAS, and others.

This allows better understanding of the trophic interactions and for the necrophagous species this information could be used in medico-legal investigations. For this reason, we recently proposed standardized laboratory methodology to assess the foraging strategies based on parallel testing of 2 food items (meat, dead larvae) (Jakubec et al.

Rationale: Persistent respiratory symptoms following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are associated with residual radiological changes in lung parenchyma, with a risk of development into lung fibrosis, and with impaired pulmonary function. Previous studies hinted at the possible efficacy of corticosteroids (CS) in facilitating the resolution of post-COVID residual changes in the lungs, but the available data is limited.
Aim: To evaluate the effects of CS treatment in post-COVID respiratory syndrome patients.
Necrophagous Diptera are the most important group of insects used for the purposes of forensic entomology. While the most utilized fly family in this context is the family Calliphoridae, there are several other families that can be of great importance during real-case investigations. This article analyzes the necrophagous flies of all families recorded from 160 real cases in Switzerland between 1993 and 2007.

Even though many factors involved in the development of the disease are known, many questions remain unanswered. Previous studies suggest that the intestinal microbiota may have a role in developing malignant diseases.

However, subsequent research has failed to support these associations consistently. In terms of the potential carcinogenic of antibiotics on lung cancer, the available evidence has not been sufficient to draw any definitive conclusions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFProper fixing and long-term preservation of entomological evidence are essential in collections and research and crucial in applied fields such as forensic entomology. Incorrectly stored samples may lose important morphological features over time, rendering molecular analyses exceedingly difficult. The most effective method for preserving soft samples such as larvae is fluid preservation.

The complex of symptoms causally related to severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 infection is called post-COVID syndrome. One of the most common respiratory complications is pulmonary fibrosis, especially after critical course of the disease.

In this study, we multiplex genotyped 18 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to replicate the findings from previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate gene studies, and extended analyses to different clinical manifestations (Löfgren's syndrome and chest X-ray [CXR] stages) including treatment response among West-Slavonic subjects (564 sarcoidosis patients and 301 healthy controls). We confirm the replication (with Bonferroni's correction) of ANXA11 rs1049550 as protective variant for sarcoidosis (odds ratio [OR] = 0.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Severe respiratory failure is one of the most serious complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In a small proportion of patients, mechanical ventilation fails to provide adequate oxygenation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is needed. The surviving individuals need long-term follow-up as it is not clear what their prognosis is.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation is the highest form of resuscitation care in management of patients with respiratory failure. In the case of acute respiratory distress syndrome, the veno-venous setting is more often used. ECMO support enables, in case of lung function failure, to obtain the necessary time for the onset of the causal treatment effect or is used as a bridge to transplantation Mortality of the patients varies according to the underlying cause and presence of risk factors (e.

It has recently received more recognition, as its species are frequently detected on large carrion, including humans, and can be useful in estimating the time of colonization (TOC) and the post-mortem interval (PMI). The immature stages of Thanatophilus sinuatus (Fabricius, 1775) were reared on three different meat diets (pork liver, pork muscle, and chicken muscle).

Cost-effective, disposable, point-of-care electrochemical biosensors are a particularly attractive option. However, there is a need for conductive and versatile carbon-based materials and inks that enable effective bioconjugation under mild conditions for the development of robust, sensitive, and selective devices.

We report a mini-series of six case reports of FtM transsexuals treated in our centre.

Objective: Intravesical administration of bacillus Calmette-Guérin is standard adjuvant treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. In spite of the fact that this immunotherapy is locoregional, there are still risk of some complications.
Methods: We describe two cases of systemic BCG infection after intravesical administration of BCG vaccine in patients with early stage of bladder cancer.
Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are at increased risk of severe course of COVID-19. Vaccination remains to be the most effective prevention of complicated courses of infection. The best contemporary conservative treatment of OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

These datasets often include a variety of heterogeneous clinical, demographic, laboratory, and personal data, and it is not a single factor but a combination of multiple factors that contribute to patient characterisation and host response. Therefore, multivariate approaches are needed to analyse these complex patient datasets, which are impossible to analyse with univariate comparisons (e.

The relationship between the lung diseases and sleep is bidirectional - the lack of quality sleep worsens the compensation and the course of the diseases and in the same time chronic lung diseases are negatively affecting sleep quality.

Over that time, numerous mutations of various degrees of virulence and pathogenicity have occurred. The course of COVID-19 infection, an acute disease caused by the virus, is rather varied, ranging from asymptomatic or symptoms of common viral respiratory diseases to critical, with multiorgan failure and high mortality in high-risk patients.
