Introduction: With increasing life expectancy and the rising incidence of stroke in young adults, it is important to know the long-term prognosis of this condition. Post-stroke delirium and post-stroke dementia are common complications of stroke that negatively affect prognosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate five-year mortality from stroke and to assess the influence of post-stroke delirium and post-stroke dementia on mortality and disability over the five-year period.

Introduction: Epidemiology and the outcomes of acute appendicitis in elderly people are very different from the younger patients. Aim of this study was to investigate the significance of frailty syndrome in the course of acute appendicitis.

Methods: All patients over 65 years old who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy between 2013 and 2021 in 2nd Department of General Surgery were included in the study.

Background: Cognitive impairment is a common complication of the acute phase of stroke, which can be transient and resolve while still in the hospital. This study evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for transient cognitive impairment and their impact on long-term prognosis in a population of acute-phase stroke patients.

Methods: Consecutive patients admitted to a stroke unit with acute stroke or transient ischemic attack were screened twice for cognitive impairment using the parallel version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment: the first time between the first and third day and the second time between the fourth and seventh day of hospitalization.

Background: Appropriate fluid management is essential in the treatment of critically ill trauma patients. Both insufficient and excessive fluid volume can be associated with worse outcomes. Intensive fluid resuscitation is a crucial element of early resuscitation in trauma; however, excessive fluid infusion may lead to fluid accumulation and consequent complications such as pulmonary edema, cardiac failure, impaired bowel function, and delayed wound healing.

Tissue fillers injections remain to be one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. The aim of this meta-analysis was to systematize and present available data on the aesthetic outcomes and safety of treating the nasolabial fold area with tissue fillers. We conducted a systematic review of randomized clinical trials that report outcomes concerning treatment of nasolabial fold area with tissue fillers.

Dementia is one of the leading complications after stroke affecting about one third of survivors. Prevalence of post-stroke dementia (PSD) differs between studies due to variability in methodology, characteristics of included patients, type of stroke, diagnostic tools used to identify patients with dementia, or time when the assessment was performed. Patients diagnosed with PSD are at higher risk of mortality, disability, and institutionalization.

Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most frequent neuropsychiatric consequence of stroke. The nature of the relationship between PSD and mortality still remains unknown. One hypothesis is that PSD could be more frequent in those patients who are more vulnerable to physical disability, a mediator variable for higher level of physical damage related to higher risk of mortality.

Background: Stroke patients are particularly vulnerable to delirium episodes, but very little is known about its subsequent adverse mental health outcomes. The author's objective was to explore the association between in-hospital delirium and depression, anxiety, anger and apathy after stroke.

Methods: A total of 750 consecutive patients with acute stroke or transient ischemic attack, were screened for delirium during hospitalization.

Background: Previous research confirmed association between delirium and subsequent dementia in different clinical settings, but the impact of post-stroke delirium on cognitive functioning is still under-investigated. Therefore, we aimed to assess the risk of dementia among patients with stroke and in-hospital delirium.

Methods: A total of 750 consecutive patients admitted to the stroke unit with acute stroke or transient ischemic attacks were screened for delirium, during the first seven days after admission.

Introduction: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is one of the most popular bariatric operations and one of the most frequently studied areas in bariatric surgery.

Aim: To summarise the characteristics of the most frequently cited studies focusing on SG.

Material And Methods: We used the Web of Science database to identify all studies focused on SG published from 2000 to 2018.

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) for treatment of acute appendicitis has gained acceptance with its considerable benefits over open appendectomy. LA, however, can involve some adverse outcomes: morbidity, prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS) and hospital readmission. Identification of predictive factors may help to identify and tailor treatment for patients with higher risk of these adverse events.

Determining the true and indisputable data regarding the vermiform appendix (VA) morphology is of a great clinical interest. The aim of this study was to provide the best evidence-based anatomical overview of the variations in location and size of VA using a systematic and meta-analytical approach. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed of studies reporting variants of the location and morphometric data regarding the VA.

Background & Aims: Recently, a parameter called "Fragility index" (FI) has been proposed, which measures how many events the statistical significance relies on. The lower the FI the more "fragile" the results, and thus more care should be taken when interpreting the results. Our aim in this study was to check FI of nutritional trials.

Introduction: The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol, which emphasizes preoperative interventions, is safely implemented in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Patients are additionally encouraged to achieve weight loss preoperatively. We aimed to identify factors contributing to preoperative weight loss and assess their influence on outcomes of bariatric surgery among patients under the ERAS protocol.

Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common surgical emergency and can occur at any age. Nearly all of the studies comparing outcomes of appendectomy between younger and older patients set cut-off point at 65 years. In this multicenter observational study, we aimed to compare laparoscopic appendectomy for AA in various groups of patients with particular interest in the elderly and very elderly in comparison to younger adults.

Bariatric surgery is associated with multiple endocrine and metabolic changes. Irisin and nesfatin-1 have recently been described as regulatory peptides involved in obesity-related insulin resistance. Our aim was to analyze the changes of those two molecules observed in patients after bariatric procedures.

Surgeons have recognized the clinical significance of the venous trunk of Henle during multiple pancreatic, colorectal, and hepatobiliary procedures. To date, no study has followed the principles of evidence-based anatomy to characterize it. Our aim was to find, gather, and systematize available anatomical data concerning this structure.

Background: Global experiences in general surgery suggest that previous abdominal surgery may negatively influence different aspects of perioperative care. As the incidence of bariatric procedures has recently increased, it is essential to assess such correlations in bariatric surgery.

Objectives: To assess whether previous abdominal surgery influences the course and outcomes of laparoscopic bariatric surgery.
