Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the links between MRI measurements of the membranous urethra and prostate volume with urinary continence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).
  • It involved 100 patients, examining MRI scans before and a year after surgery, measuring anatomical features and assessing urinary function using a standardized questionnaire.
  • Results showed that longer membranous urethral lengths (MUL) before and after surgery were positively associated with higher continence rates, while larger prostate volumes were linked to increased urinary incontinence.

Background: Reverse causation is a challenge in many drug-cancer associations, where the cancer symptoms are potentially mistaken for drug indication symptoms. However, tools to assess the magnitude of this type of bias are currently lacking. We used a simulation-based approach to investigate the impact of reverse causation on the association between the use of topical tacrolimus and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in a multinational, population-based study using topical corticosteroids (TCS) as comparator.

Article Synopsis
  • The CAIRO4 study aimed to determine if upfront primary tumor resection (PTR) combined with systemic therapy improves overall survival in patients with synchronous unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).
  • Conducted in The Netherlands and Denmark, the trial involved 206 patients who were randomly assigned to receive either PTR plus systemic therapy or systemic therapy alone, with the primary endpoint being overall survival.
  • Results showed that median overall survival was slightly higher for the upfront PTR group (20.1 months) compared to the no PTR group (18.3 months), but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.32), indicating no clear benefit from adding PTR to treatment.

Plankton form the base of marine food webs, making them important indicators of ecosystem status. Changes in the abundance of plankton functional groups, or lifeforms, can affect higher trophic levels and can indicate important shifts in ecosystem functioning. Here, we extend this knowledge by combining data from Continuous Plankton Recorder and fixed-point stations to provide the most comprehensive analysis of plankton time-series for the North-East Atlantic and North-West European shelf to date.

Article Synopsis
  • Participants (109 healthy men) received either Aronia or a placebo for 90 days, focusing on health outcomes like cholesterol levels, sperm quality, and antioxidant glutathione levels, with variations based on age, lifestyle, and dietary habits.
  • Results showed that Aronia supplementation improved glutathione in men with low baseline levels and high coffee intake, reduced sperm DNA fragmentation and increased motile sperm in older and overweight men, and lowered cholesterol in younger men, but other health parameters showed no significant changes.

Introduction: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) increases with age. In combination with an ageing population, the number of older patients undergoing surgical treatment for CRC is therefore expected to increase. Sarcopenia and cachexia are potentially modifiable risk factors of a negative surgical outcome.

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that intracorporeal anastomosis (ICA) in minimally invasive right colectomy may improve postoperative recovery compared with extracorporeal anastomosis (ECA). It has been hypothesized that creating the anastomosis extracorporeally may cause mesenteric traction and compromised intestinal perfusion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of either ICA or ECA on intestinal perfusion.

Objectives: To explore the effects of preoperative high-intensity interval training (HIIT) compared to usual care on tumour natural killer (NK)-cell infiltration in men with localised prostate cancer (PCa), as NK-cell infiltration has been proposed as one of the key mechanisms whereby exercise can modulate human tumours.

Patients And Methods: A total of 30 patients with localised PCa undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) were randomised (2:1) to either preoperative aerobic HIIT four-times weekly (EX; n = 20) or usual care (CON; n = 10) from time of inclusion until scheduled surgery. Tumour NK-cell infiltration was assessed by immunohistochemistry (CD56 ) in diagnostic core needle biopsies and corresponding prostatic tissue from the RP.

Objective: To determine if minimally invasive right colectomy with intra-corporeal anastomosis improves postoperative recovery compared to extra-corporeal anastomosis.

Background: Previous trials have shown that intracorporeal anastomosis improves postoperative recovery; however, it has not yet been evaluated in a setting with optimized perioperative care or with patient-related outcome measures.

Methods: This was a multicenter, triple-blind, randomized clinical trial at two high-volume colorectal centers with strict adherence to optimized perioperative care pathways.

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, whether patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal disease (RMD) treated with conventional (cs) or biologic (b) disease-modifying drugs (DMARDs) exhibit an adequate immune response to the currently available SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations remains a major concern. There is an urgent need for more SARS-CoV-2 vaccine efficacy data to inform healthcare providers on the potential need for a booster vaccine. We established the '' study (DECODIR) in March 2021 in order to assess and compare the immunoglobulin G (IgG response) of the SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 vaccine (Pfizer, Groton, CT, USA/BioNTech, Mainz, Germany) and mRNA-1273 vaccine (Moderna, Cambridge, MA, USA) administered as part of the national vaccine roll out in patients with RMDs, irrespective of treatment.

European legislation requires monitoring of toxic algae in marine areas where shellfish are harvested for consumption. Monitoring assumes the existence of homogeneous water bodies, the definition of which have important implications for stakeholders and consumers. Yet, the definition of homogeneous water bodies remains unclear.

Gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALTs) comprise key intestinal immune inductive sites, including the Peyer's patches of the small intestine and different types of isolated lymphoid follicle (ILF) found along the length of the gut. Our understanding of human GALT is limited due to a lack of protocols for their isolation. Here we describe a technique that, uniquely among intestinal cell isolation protocols, allows identification and isolation of all human GALT, as well as GALT-free intestinal lamina propria (LP).

Phaeocystis pouchetii (Hariot) Lagerheim, 1893 regularly dominates phytoplankton blooms in higher latitudes spanning from the English Channel to the Arctic. Through zooplankton grazing and microbial activity, it is considered to be a key resource for the entire marine food web, but the actual relevance of biomass transfer to higher trophic levels is still under discussion. Cell physiology and algal nutritional state are suggested to be major factors controlling the observed variability in zooplankton grazing.
