Plant individuals within a species can differ markedly in their leaf chemical composition, forming so-called chemotypes. Little is known about whether such differences impact the microbial communities associated with leaves and how different environmental conditions may shape these relationships. We used Tanacetum vulgare as a model plant to study the impacts of maternal effects, leaf terpenoid chemotype, and the environment on the leaf bacterial community by growing plant clones in the field and a greenhouse.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined treatment outcomes for adults with idiopathic and secondary megacolon (MC) and megarectum (MR), highlighting the challenges in managing this rare condition due to the lack of optimal treatment guidelines.
  • A total of 67 patients were analyzed, with only 29.9% receiving correct diagnoses, and findings showed that surgical intervention resulted in significantly lower readmission rates and reduced laxative dependence compared to conservative treatment.
  • The authors suggest that surgical options may be more beneficial if a correct diagnosis is made early on and after conservative methods have been tried.

  • ERCP is a complex medical procedure that carries significant risks, including complications like pancreatitis and bleeding, making specialized training and a high volume of procedures essential for success.
  • The success rate of ERCPs is closely tied to the number of procedures performed annually, with studies suggesting that centers performing at least 200 ERCPs per year demonstrate better outcomes.
  • Emerging reforms in German hospitals emphasize the need for minimum procedure volumes in specialized centers, highlighting that high-quality ERCP requires not just frequency, but also the availability of comprehensive resources and support for managing complications.

Gastroenterology has made crucial advances in diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures, opening up improvements in the treatment of many patients. Thus, organ-preserving treatments are increasingly being made possible, replacing more invasive organ resecting surgical procedures. At the same time, the degree of complexity and risks varies widely between different endoscopic procedures.

Introduction: Assessing intraspecific variation in plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) involves pitfalls that may bias biological interpretation, particularly when several laboratories collaborate on joint projects. Comparative, inter-laboratory ring trials can inform on the reproducibility of such analyses.

Objectives: In a ring trial involving five laboratories, we investigated the reproducibility of VOC collections with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and analyses by thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS).

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated mannitol as a bowel preparation laxative for colonoscopy and tested three different doses (50g, 100g, and 150g) to find the most effective one for future use.
  • Results showed that the 100g dose was the most effective, with 94.4% of patients achieving adequate bowel preparation, along with good adherence and safety.
  • The findings suggest that while mannitol's effectiveness and safety depend on dosage, gas concentrations were minimal across all doses, identifying mannitol 100g as the ideal candidate for further studies.

Background: Photochemical internalization (PCI) is a novel technology for light-induced enhancement of the local therapeutic effect of cancer drugs, utilizing a specially designed photosensitizing molecule (fimaporfin). The photosensitizing molecules are trapped in endosomes along with macromolecules or drugs. Photoactivation of fimaporfin disrupts the endosomal membranes so that drug molecules are released from endosomes inside cells and can reach their therapeutic target in the cell cytosol or nucleus.

Background: The optimal preoperative treatment for locally advanced pancreatic cancer is unknown. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine followed by fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) as multidrug induction chemotherapy regimens in locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

Methods: In this open-label, multicentre, randomised phase 2 study, done at 28 centres in Germany, eligible patients were adults (aged 18-75 years) with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1 and histologically or cytologically confirmed, treatment-naive locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma, as determined by local multidisciplinary team review.

Intraspecific and intra-individual differences in emitted volatile compounds and in surface and phloem sap-related metabolites do not only affect host plant choice of monophagous aphids but may also guide them to the plant part that provides their ideal niche by maximising their fitness. However, little is known about the variation at these different plant appearance levels. We investigated the preferences of the monophagous aphid species Macrosiphoniella tancetaria and Uroleucon tanaceti for different plant parts (inflorescence stems, young and old leaves) of Tanacetum vulgare plants from two chemotypes, testing their reactions towards volatile, surface and phloem sap-related cues.

Background: The detection of joint swelling caused by synovitis is important for the diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis. Ultrasound (US) and MRI have proven to be more sensitive and reliable than physical examination, but they are time-consuming and expensive. The automated breast volume scanner was developed to acquire serial B-mode pictures of the female breast and these can be analyzed in all three dimensions.

Phloem sap quality can differ between and within plants, and affect the performance of aphids. In turn, aphid infestation may change the chemical composition and nutritional value of phloem sap. However, the effects of different aphid species on the overall phloem sap composition of distinct parts within plant individuals in relation to aphid performance remain unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Endoscopic decompression for patients with ileus can be a viable option, but it's often done without sufficient scientific backing and should follow CT imaging to distinguish between types of obstruction.
  • Coecal dilation above 12 cm and transverse colon dilation above 6 cm increase risks of serious complications, and endoscopic procedures should ideally be elective due to high complication rates.
  • Conservative treatment successfully resolves over 90% of pseudo-obstruction cases within 24 to 48 hours, making endoscopic decompression often unnecessary, while the use of self-expanding metal stents carries significant risks.
