Article Synopsis
  • Research highlights that the accuracy of clinical prognoses for survival after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is crucial since many patients die due to withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy based on assumed poor outcomes.
  • The study's objective was to evaluate if the automated measurement of cerebral contusion size and location can enhance the IMPACT score, a current prognostic model that doesn’t account for where brain injuries occur.
  • Conducted in 18 US trauma centers, the study assessed adult patients with moderate or severe TBI using an AI tool, BLAST-CT, to analyze CT scans, focusing on how contusion characteristics relate to long-term recovery outcomes using tools like the Glasgow Outcome Scale.

The human kidney is a vital organ with a remarkable ability to coordinate the activity of up to a million nephrons, its main functional tissue unit (FTU), and maintain homeostasis. We developed tissue processing and analytical methods to construct a 3D map of neurovascular nephron connectivity of the human kidney and glean insights into how this structural organization enables coordination of various functions of the nephron, such as glomerular filtration, solute and water absorption, secretion by the tubules, and regulation of blood flow and pressure by the juxtaglomerular apparatus, in addition to how these functions change across disease and lifespans. Using light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) and morphometric analysis we discovered changes in anatomical orientation of the vascular pole, glomerular density, volume, and innervation through postnatal development and ageing.

Re-discovery of known metabolites is a common challenge in natural product-based drug discovery, and to avoid re-discovery, dereplication has been proposed for identifying known metabolites at the early stage of isolation. A majority of methods use LCMS to profile the extract and ignore the known mass. LC-HRMS profiling may generate a long mass list of metabolites.

An N-of-1 observational design characterizes associations among several variables over time in a single individual. Traditional statistical models recommended for experimental N-of-1 trials may not adequately model these observational relationships. We propose an additive Bayesian network using a generalized linear mixed-effects model for the local mean as a novel method for modeling each of these relationships in a data-driven manner.

The most common benign neoplastic uterine tumors that grow monoclonally from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus are uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, which may occur as a single lesion or as multiple lesions with variation in size from microscopic to large macroscopic extent. The majority are diagnosed in the preclinical routine reliably, despite challenges due to the possibility of multiple differential diagnoses. Hence, this report highlights a case of a postmenopausal female of 53-year-old working as a staff nurse at the same hospital and who visited the outpatient department of obstetrics and gynecology with chief complaints of pain in the right side of the abdomen for four hours (presentation similar to that of appendicitis).
