Transmembrane electrochemical gradients drive solute uptake and constitute a substantial fraction of the cellular energy pool in bacteria. These gradients act not only as "homeostatic contributors," but also play a dynamic and keystone role in several bacterial functions, including sensing, stress response, and metabolism. At the system level, multiple gradients interact with ion transporters and bacterial behavior in a complex, rapid, and emergent manner; consequently, experiments alone cannot untangle their interdependencies.

Discovery of microorganisms and their relevant surface peptides that specifically bind to target materials of interest can be achieved through iterative biopanning-based screening of cellular libraries having high diversity. Recently, microfluidics-based biopanning methods have been developed and exploited to overcome the limitations of conventional methods where controlling the shear stress applied to remove cells that do not bind or only weakly bind to target surfaces is difficult and the overall experimental procedure is labor-intensive. Despite the advantages of such microfluidic methods and successful demonstration of their utility, these methods still require several rounds of iterative biopanning.

Research in low-and-middle income countries links maternal depression to child undernutrition; conversely, maternal depression is a risk factor for child overweight in higher income settings. Less is known about impacts of maternal mental health in dual burden contexts or the environmental and behavioral pathways linking maternal mental health to child health outcomes. Consequently, we examine the association between maternal mental health and the dual burden of undernutrition/infectious disease and overweight/obesity in children and test whether pathogenic, dietary and caregiving exposures mediate this association.

Many polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners are found in both legacy Aroclor mixtures and modern materials, and both contribute to PCBs levels in ambient air. The various sources of PCBs make it difficult to quantify the relative importance of emissions from remaining legacy materials and emissions of PCBs released from production and use of modern products. To address this challenge, we utilized active and passive sampling, analytical methods optimized for PCBs, and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and cos theta to examine the chemical signature of PCBs in Chicago air.

Few studies have examined oral anticancer treatment utilization patterns among Medicare beneficiaries. To assess treatment utilization patterns of newly initiated oral anticancer agents across national samples of Medicare beneficiaries for 5 cancer types: chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), multiple myeloma (MM), metastatic prostate cancer (mPC), metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), and metastatic breast cancer (mBC). This retrospective claims analysis used 100% Medicare Chronic Condition Data Warehouse (CCW) Parts A, B, and D files from 2011 to 2014 (for CML, MM, mPC, and mRCC patients) and a 5% random fee-for-service sample from 2011 to 2013 (for mBC patients).

Background: Early life exposure to adverse environments, and maternal stress in particular, has been shown to increase risk for metabolic diseases and neurobehavioral disorders. While many studies have examined the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) as the primary mechanism behind these relationships, emerging research on the brain-gut axis suggests that the microbiome may play a role. We developed a bioelectronic communication system that is enabled by a redox signal transduction modality to exchange information between a living cell-embedded bioelectronics interface and an engineered microbial network. A naturally communicating three-member microbial network is 'plugged into' an external electronic system that interrogates and controls biological function in real time. First, electrode-generated redox molecules are programmed to activate gene expression in an engineered population of electrode-attached bacterial cells, effectively creating a living transducer electrode.

UVA-induced deleterious effect of thiopurine prodrugs including azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioguanine (6-TG) increases the risk of cancer development due to the incorporation of 6-TG in patients' DNA. The catalytic mechanism by which thiobases act as a sustained oxidant producer has yet to be explored, especially through the Type I electron transfer pathway that produces superoxide radicals (O2˙-). Under Fenton-like conditions O2˙- radicals convert to extremely reactive hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), thus carrying even higher risk of biological damage than that induced by the well-studied type II reaction.

In this study, naturally derived cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), a renewable and easily modified nanomaterial with low cytotoxicity, were rendered bioactive via one-step functionalization with mannopyranoside (CNFs-mannose) for use as a new glyconanomaterial platform for control of bacterial pathogenesis. The recognition affinity of the bioactive surfaces toward fimbriated was assessed using genetically engineered strains as well as wild-type (WT) MG1655 bacteria. The results revealed high surface coverages of FimH+ (with overexpressed FimH) and WT bacteria on the films of CNFs-mannose due to specific interaction between prevalent mannose on nanofibrils and FimH receptors on fimbriae.

Using data from three iterations of Ecuador's nationally representative, population-based survey Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (ENSANUT/ENDEMAIN), spanning 23 years, this study examines women's mode of delivery outcomes by sociodemographic characteristics and hospital type (private, public, social security) in light of Ecuador's major health care reform over the past two decades.

Objectives: Global increases in caesarean deliveries are exposing more infants to perinatal environments that are evolutionarily novel and potentially increasing their risks for inflammatory conditions. Yet, the pathways linking caesareans to later health outcomes are not well understood, particularly in dual burden contexts. We test two of the hypothesized pathways, altered immune function and gut microbiota, which may link delivery mode to later health outcomes and test whether these associations persist when controlling for postnatal nutritional and pathogenic exposures.
