The aim of this study was to evaluate cadmium stress induced changes in the growth, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant activity of associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and their amelioration by calcium application. Cadmium stress can cause alterations in the physiological and biochemical processes in plants. A calcium application combined with an AMF treatment resulted in the reduction of lipid peroxidation and the production of hydrogen peroxide, thereby mediating the mitigation of cadmium induced oxidative stress.

The performances of silicate glasses as containment matrices or vectors of radioactive ions in nuclear waste storage and in situ radiotherapy are influenced by the effect of interstitial water on the glass durability. In order to assess how hydration determines changes to atomistic structural features which control the glass degradation, we have carried out molecular dynamics simulations of a typical yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS) glass employed in radiotherapy, incorporating different water contents. The analysis of the models allows us to discuss the way in which hydroxyl groups are distributed in the glass structure and modify or disrupt the aluminosilicate glass network.

Zn(II) complexes of the following new, fluorine-containing, benzothiazole-derived ligands have been synthesized and characterized crystallographically: 2-(3,3,3-trifluoro-2-oxopropyl)benzothiazole (3), 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-2-(3,3,3-trifluoro-2-oxopropyl)benzothiazole (4), 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (12), 2-(3,4,5,6-tetrafluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrafluorobenzothiazole (13), and 2-(3,4,5,6-tetrafluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (16); the Cu(II) complex of ligand 4 is also reported. These are analogs of the important photo- and electroluminescent material [Zn(BTZ)(2)](2), where H-BTZ = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole. DFT calculations indicate that HOMO and LUMO energy levels in these materials are substantially lowered by fluorination.

The incorporation of yttrium in bioactive glasses (BGs) could lead to a new generation of radionuclide vectors for cancer therapy, with high biocompatibility, controlled biodegradability and the ability to enhance the growth of new healthy tissues after the treatment with radionuclides. It is essential to assess whether and to what extent yttrium incorporation affects the favourable properties of the BG matrix: ideally, one would like to combine the high surface reactivity typical of BGs with a slow release of radioactive yttrium. Molecular Dynamics simulations show that, compared to a BG composition with the same silica fraction, incorporation of yttrium results in two opposing effects on the glass durability: a more fragmented silicate network (leading to lower durability) and a stronger yttrium-mediated association between separate silicate fragments (leading to higher durability).
