Background: This article summarizes the European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Registry's 2015 Annual Report. It describes the epidemiology of renal replacement therapy (RRT) for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in 2015 within 36 countries.
Methods: In 2016 and 2017, the ERA-EDTA Registry received data on patients who were undergoing RRT for ESRD in 2015, from 52 national or regional renal registries.
The optical response of periodically nanotextured layer stacks with dimensions comparable to the wavelength of the incident light can be computed with rigorous Maxwell solvers, such as the finite element method (FEM). Experimentally, such layer stacks are often prepared on glass superstrates with a thickness, which is orders of magnitude larger than the wavelength. For many applications, light in these thick superstrates can be treated incoherently.

We included patients aged ≥75-84 years (termed older adults) receiving renal replacement therapy in thirteen European countries between 2005 and 2014. Country differences and time trends in access to, and allocation of kidney transplants were examined.

Methods: Using data from patients aged 20 years or older from all 11 national or regional registries providing co-morbidity data to the European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association Registry, we examined the prevalence of the following co-morbidities: diabetes mellitus (DM) (primary renal disease and/or co-morbidity), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), congestive heart failure (CHF), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and malignancy.
Improved understanding of sex and gender-specific differences in the aetiology, mechanisms and epidemiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD) could help nephrologists better address the needs of their patients. Population-based studies indicate that CKD epidemiology differs by sex, affecting more women than men, especially with regard to stage G3 CKD. The effects of longer life expectancy on the natural decline of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) with age, as well as potential overdiagnosis of CKD through the inappropriate use of GFR equations, might be in part responsible for the greater prevalence of CKD in women.

To assess the usability of this model for use in Europe, we externally validated the model in 10 European countries.
Methods: Data from the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Registry were used.
In order to evaluate the influence of deoxynivalenol (DON) on histomorphological and immunohistochemical parameters in the development of porcine fetuses, five pregnant sows were fed a control diet (0.15 mg DON/kg diet) and seven sows a contaminated diet (4.42 mg DON/kg diet) between days 35 and 70 of gestation.

We aimed to give an overview of existing pediatric RRT registries worldwide, identify regions with a need to commence or increase data collection on pediatric RRT, and provide a rationale for developing a global RRT registry.
Methods: A survey assessing pediatric RRT registry status was sent to International Pediatric Nephrology Associateion (IPNA) members in 127 countries in January 2016.
Seasons and climate influence the regulation of blood pressure (BP) in the general population and in hemodialysis patients. It is unknown whether this phenomenon varies across the world. Our objective was to estimate BP seasonality in hemodialysis patients from different geographical locations.

Using ERA-EDTA Registry data we determined survival outcomes of kidney allografts donated from the same older deceased donor (55-70 years), and transplanted into one recipient younger and one recipient of similar age to the donor. The recipient pairs were divided into two groups: group 1; younger (median age: 52 years) and older (60 years) and group 2; younger (41 years) and older (60 years).

Here, we show that the PIN auxin efflux carrier family possesses three highly conserved putative mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) sites adjacent to the phosphorylation sites of the well-characterised AGC kinase PINOID, which regulates the polar localisation of PINs and directional auxin transport, thereby underpinning organ growth. The conserved sites of PIN1 are phosphorylated in vitro by two environmentally activated MAPKs, MPK4 and MPK6.

The majority of patients with CKD are at risk of accelerated cardiovascular disease and death. For those who progress to end-stage renal disease, the limited accessibility to renal replacement therapy is a problem in many parts of the world.

Nine partners from seven European Union countries will participate in this project.

Methods: Data for 4686 first kidney transplantations performed in 13 countries in 1990-2013 were extracted from the ESPN/ERA-EDTA Registry.
Few data exist on the prospects in adulthood for children on chronic renal replacement therapy (RRT). This article summarizes the results of a comprehensive Dutch long-term follow-up study performed in 2000 and 2010 of patients with RRT onset at age <15 years between 1972 and 1992. After a median of 25.

Executive function has indeed been proposed, but hardly tested as a potential mediator. The aim of the present study was therefore to examine the mediating role of executive function in the relationship between motor ability and academic achievement, also investigating the individual contribution of specific motor abilities to the hypothesized mediated linkage to academic achievement.

For the optimizations we combine the transfer-matrix method with a simulated annealing algorithm. The optimizations are conducted within experimentally accessible and relevant layer-thickness ranges, which allows to extract applicable device guidelines.

Methods: Data were available for 88 male PBS patients aged <20 years who started renal replacement therapy (RRT) between 1990 and 2013 in 35 European countries. Patient characteristics, survival, and transplantation outcomes were compared with those of male patients requiring RRT due to congenital obstructive uropathy (COU) and renal hypoplasia or dysplasia (RHD).

Nonetheless, mortality remains at least 30 times higher than that of healthy peers. Patient survival is multifactorial and dependent on various patient and treatment characteristics and degree of economic welfare of the country in which a patient is treated.
