Who are the trauma team leaders across Canada? A national survey evaluating the profession in adult and pediatric level one trauma centres.

Objectives: Trauma Team Leaders (TTLs) are critical for coordinating and leading trauma resuscitations. This survey sought to characterize the demographics and professional practices of Canadian TTLs at level one trauma centres. As a secondary objective, this information will be utilized to inform the operational goals of the Trauma Association of Canada (TAC) TTL Committee.

Time to operating room matters in modern management of pancreatic injuries: A national review on the management of adult pancreatic injury at Canadian level 1 trauma centers.

Background: Pancreatic injuries are rare, difficult to diagnose, and complex to manage despite multiple published guidelines. This study was undertaken to evaluate the current diagnosis and management of pancreatic trauma in Canadian trauma centers.

Methods: This is a multi-institutional retrospective study from 2009 to 2014 including patients from eight level 1 trauma centers across Canada.

Esophageal Balloon-Directed Ventilator Management for Postpneumonectomy Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Objective: Postpneumonectomy patients may develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). There is a paucity of data regarding the optimal management of mechanical ventilation for postpneumonectomy patients. Esophageal balloon pressure monitoring has been used in traditional ARDS patients to set positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and minimize transpulmonary driving pressure (Δ ), but its clinical use has not been previously described nor validated in postpneumonectomy patients.

Dumb bell shaped morphology of liver: an autopsy case report.

Medicolegal autopsy on the dead body of an elderly female revealed that the liver was having some unusual shape. The left lobe of liver was bifid, having dumb bell type morphology. Also there were some furrows which were observed over the anterior surface of the liver.

Forked rib: an autopsy case report and discussion on its clinical implications.

Congenital anomalies of the ribs are relatively uncommon. We report a case of forked rib which was observed during the routine autopsy examination of a male child of aged 7 yrs at our institution. We observed that the right side fourth rib was showing bifurcation at its anterior end.

Adenomyomatous polyp of the uterus: Report of an autopsy case and review of the literature.

Adenomyomatous polyps of the endometrium are a rare subtype of endometrial polyps. In addition to the usual features of endometrial polyps, they also contain a smooth muscle component. Grossly they appear no different than ordinary endometrial polyps.

An autopsy case of sudden unexplained death caused by malaria.

Sudden unexplained deaths, especially those unwitnessed can lead to forensic issues and would necessitate the need for a meticulous and complete postmortem examination including ancillary investigations to discover the cause of death. We herein report a case of sudden unexplained death caused by malaria in an apparently healthy individual. This fatal case is presented to remind the forensic pathologist of the possibility of malaria as a cause of sudden unexplained death in malaria-endemic regions.

Forensic evaluation of occupational marks in establishing identity--a case report.

The livings have responsibilities for the dead; and in particular, civilized societies recognize the need for identity both during life and at death, particularly in circumstances when an unknown body is summoned for medico-legal autopsy. There are numerous tools for identification of an unknown body which includes visual identification, fingerprints, medical prostheses, odontological techniques, DNA fingerprints and to include in the list is the occupational marks over the body sustained during the course of his or her profession. The medico-legal investigators should possess comprehensive knowledge of such occupational marks, which aid in identification.

Traumatic degloving lesion of male external genitalia.

Injury to the male external genitalia is relatively uncommon when compared with other parts of the human body. Trauma to external genitalia could result from accidents involving motor vehicles, power farm machinery, gun shot and stab injuries. We present a rare case of traumatic degloving injury of male external genitalia associated with partial penile amputation and loss of both testes sparing the internal abdominal and pelvic organs, resulting from run over by a heavy vehicle tyre.
