Article Synopsis
  • Biodegradable polymers, specifically PVA-PCD, are being developed as eco-friendly substitutes for traditional plastics, focusing on their environmental advantages.
  • The PVA-PCD biopolymers were created by chemically linking polyvinyl alcohol with cardanol-derived polyols, and their properties were analyzed using various methods like FT-IR and TGA to assess their structure and stability.
  • Results showed that while increasing crosslinking enhances the material's thermal stability and makes it more hydrophobic, it also increases brittleness and decreases swelling capacity, highlighting their potential for sustainable applications like biodegradable packaging.

Importance: Although optic disc hemorrhage (DH) is widely recognized as a glaucoma risk factor, its clinical relevance in relation to proximity has not been investigated.

Objective: To determine the association of the proximal location of DH with glaucoma progression.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this longitudinal observational cohort study, 146 eyes of 146 patients at Seoul National University Hospital who had had 1 or more DH with at least 5 years of follow-up and had at least 5 reliable visual field examinations were included.

The effects of coffee ( L.) berry pulp extracts (CBP extracts) on the improvement of diabetes, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were evaluated using various in vitro antioxidant activity assays and through a high-fat diet-induced mild diabetic obese mouse model. After an 84-day oral administration of CBP extracts (400-100 mg/kg), bioactivities were evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the ratios of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in Asian populations by analyzing data from population-based research.
  • - A total of 20 studies involving 52,522 individuals from 13 countries were reviewed, finding that the PACG to POAG prevalence ratio is approximately 2.204, indicating high variability between studies.
  • - The results suggest that increased prevalence of POAG significantly influences the PACG to POAG ratio, with the study emphasizing that understanding this relationship is crucial for addressing glaucoma in the Asian population.

Purpose: To investigate the relative risks (RRs) for dementia among individuals with glaucoma.

Methods: We conducted a search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases for observational cohort studies examining the association between glaucoma and dementia until March 2023. Two authors independently screened all titles and abstracts according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

This study aimed to test the effect of online gaming speculative experiences on problem gambling via irrational beliefs in and attitudes toward gambling. Data were obtained from the Korea Center on Gambling Problems, and participants comprised 386 adolescents (female 168, male 218) who currently play online games and have experience with betting games or gambling. The main findings are that (i) online game speculative experience positively influenced gambling attitude ( = 0.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the Clinical Activity Score, serum thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody and thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin levels, chorioretinal blood vessels, and extraocular muscle thickness in patients with thyroid eye disease following systemic steroid treatment.

Methods: This prospective observational study enrolled 57 patients with active thyroid eye disease who received systemic intravenous glucocorticoids for 12 weeks. Demographics, clinical activity scores, optical coherence tomography images, and serum thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody levels were assessed at baseline, at 6 and 12 weeks after intravenous (IV) GC therapy initiation, and 2 months after IV GC therapy termination.

Several phenomena occurring throughout the life of living things start and end with proteins. Various proteins form one complex structure to control detailed reactions. In contrast, one protein forms various structures and implements other biological phenomena depending on the situation.

This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between ophthalmologic factors and the serologic indicator soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1): placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio in patients with preeclampsia using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A). A total of 52 pregnant patients (104 eyes) diagnosed with preeclampsia were recruited during their hospital stay. The associations between the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and chorioretinal measurements, including the choroidal thickness (CT), foveal avascular zone, vascular density, and ganglion cell layer+ were evaluated.

Introduction: Alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS) are widely used for hand hygiene due to the coronavirus disease pandemic. However, risk awareness regarding its adverse effects is lacking. We aim to report a case of ocular chemical burn that showed severe clinical presentation associated with ABHS.

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is the 'gold standard' treatment for nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). However, despite its recent technical advancements, complications are possible. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we present the first reported case of delayed unilateral pneumocephalus after bilateral endoscopic DCR.

Atomically dispersed precious metal catalysts have emerged as a frontier in catalysis. However, a robust, generic synthetic strategy toward atomically dispersed catalysts is still lacking, which has limited systematic studies revealing their general catalytic trends distinct from those of conventional nanoparticle (NP)-based catalysts. Herein, we report a general synthetic strategy toward atomically dispersed precious metal catalysts, which consists of "trapping" precious metal precursors on a heteroatom-doped carbonaceous layer coated on a carbon support and "immobilizing" them with a SiO layer during thermal activation.

Individual characteristics, family- and school-related variables, and environmental variables have equal importance in understanding Internet addiction. Most previous studies on Internet addiction have focused on individual factors; those that considered environmental influence typically only examined the proximal environment. Effective prevention and intervention of Internet addiction require a framework that integrates individual- and environmental-level factors.

We synthesized benzoate ester derivatives of kojic acid with and without adamantane moiety. Benzoate derivatives 2a-e that did not contain an adamantane moiety showed potent tyrosinase inhibitory activities. However, depigmenting activity was not noted in a cell-based assay.

Vitamin E-succinate (VES) induced monocvtic differentiation of HL-60 human leukemia cells. Treatment with VES increased the nitroblue tetrazolium reduction activity, and the expression of monocyte specific cell surface antigen, CD14 and c-fms. During the monocytic differentiation of HL-60 cells that were induced by VES, the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) was increased by 12 h and then gradually decreased to a level that was similar to that of the control.
