Previous studies have reported the association between myocardial infarction (MI) and air pollution (AP). However, limited information is available regarding the long-term effects of AP on the relative incidence rates of ST-elevation MI (STEMI) and Non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI). We investigated the association between long-term exposure to AP and the incidence of STEMI.

Chest pain is the most common symptom of coronary artery disease (CAD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known single strongest risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the impact of CAD nor DM on long-term clinical effects is reported widely, but the prognostic factors of non-DM patients presenting with chest pain without significant CAD are limited. A total of 1,046 patients with chest pain without DM and significant CAD who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) and acetylcholine (ACH) provocation tests were finally enrolled.

Background: Previous studies reported that compared to conventional dual antiplatelet therapy (DAT; aspirin + clopidogrel), triple antiplatelet therapy (TAT), involving the addition of cilostazol to DAT, had better clinical outcomes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the optimal duration of TAT is yet to be determined.

Methods: In total, 985 patients with STEMI who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DESs) were prospectively enrolled in 15 PCI centers in South Korea and China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between drug-eluting stents (DESs) and coronary artery spasm (CAS) to determine their long-term implications on patient health.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 2,797 patients who underwent an acetylcholine provocation test, finding that those with DES-associated CAS experienced more severe symptoms than those with other forms of CAS.
  • The results showed that patients with DES-CAS had significantly higher rates of coronary revascularization, chest pain, and major adverse cardiac events over three years, indicating the need for careful monitoring of these patients.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is considered an effective treatment in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). However, the long-term durability of below-the-knee (BTK) PTA is known to be limited. This study sought to compare the 1-year clinical outcomes following stenting versus balloon angioplasty alone in BTK lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the link between anaemia and the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) in a Korean population over a 5-year period, finding limited data on this association.
  • The research included 17,515 patients without a prior DM history, categorizing them into anaemia and non-anaemia groups, and utilized propensity score matching to balance baseline characteristics.
  • Results showed that the anaemia group had a significantly higher rate of developing type 2 DM (10.7% vs 7.7%) and a higher mortality rate (2.6% vs 1.2%) compared to the non-anaemia group, suggesting a potential link that needs further investigation through randomized trials.

Background And Purpose: Rare comparative studies investigated the relationship between combination therapy of antihypertensive drugs and the incidence of new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM). The aim of this study was to evaluate which combination therapy, calcium channel blocker (CCB) with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or CCB with angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (ARB), is best in reducing/preventing the development of NODM during 4-year follow-up periods in non-diabetic hypertensive Korean patients.

Materials And Methods: Finally, a total of 1221 consecutive hypertensive patients without a history of diabetes mellitus who had been prescribed CCB were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the two groups, an ACEI group (combination CCB with ACEI,  = 251) and an ARB group (combination CCB with ARB,  = 970).

Objective: There is a scarcity of comparative studies between Endeavor Resolute®-zotarolimus-eluting stent (R-ZES) and Resolute Integrity®-ZES (I-ZES) during long-term follow-up periods. Although the stent alloy and the polymer of these two ZESs are similar, the platform and the design of these two stents are different. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of these two different ZESs in the all-comer Korean patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) during a 3-year follow-up period.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory polyarthritis characterized by progressive joint destruction. IL-17-producing CD4 T (Th17) cells play pivotal roles in RA development and progression. Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor alpha (RORα) is a negative regulator of inflammatory responses, whereas RORγt, another member of the ROR family, is a Th17 lineage-specific transcription factor.

Background: Successful management of chronic total occlusion (CTO)by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is known to be associated with better clinical outcomes than failed PCI. However, whether angiographic and clinical outcomes following PCI for long CTO lesions differ from those following PCI for short CTO lesions in the drug eluting stent (DES) era remains unknown. We therefore investigated whether CTO lesion length can significantly influence6-month angiographic and 2-year clinical outcomes following successful CTO PCI.
