Background: Despite a wealth of literature on marital dissatisfaction and adverse health outcomes, little is known about the relationship between marital dissatisfaction and frailty in older adults.

Methods: This longitudinal study utilised the data of 11 174 individuals who participated in the biennial Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing survey from 2006 to 2020 and were aged ≥45 during the initial wave. Frailty was measured using a frailty instrument, which utilised exhaustion, social isolation, and handgrip strength weakness.

In condensed matter physics, the Kagome lattice and its inherent flat bands have attracted considerable attention for their prediction and observation to host a variety of exotic physical phenomena. Despite extensive efforts to fabricate thin films of Kagome materials aimed at modulating flat bands through electrostatic gating or strain manipulation, progress has been limited. Here, we report the observation of a d-orbital hybridized Kagome-derived flat band in Ag/Si(111) as revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

This study aims to evaluate the ecosystem services of Upo wetland, one of the best-known Ramsar sites in Korea, reflecting the characteristics of the ecological assets and local knowledges in the area. Application of spatial text-mining begins with collecting local perceptions and knowledge of residents on the 17 ecological assets of Upo site and surrounding area. Our results identified five important ecosystem services: flood control during heavy rainfall, water purification by aquatic plants, cultural and natural heritages, agricultural products and water provision for crop cultivation.

Oocyte quality is essential for reproductive capacity, but it rapidly declines with age. In addition to aging, maternal nutrition is a major concern in maintaining oocyte quality. Gliadin, a major component of gluten, causes gluten toxicity, which has been reported in a variety of gluten-related disorders.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic greatly impacted the health and economy worldwide. Children and adolescents are less affected by COVID-19 but are more vulnerable to secondary damage, such as mental health. We would like to evaluate the subjective economic changes caused by COVID-19 in Korea and adolescents' mental health status.

Background: To evaluate the effects of lid debris debridement and meibomian gland expression (MGX) on extracellular matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels and clinical outcomes of moderate and severe MGD.

Methods: In this retrospective case series study, a total 48 eyes of 24 patients with moderate and severe MGD underwent one session of lid debris debridement using the BlephEx combined with MGX. We evaluated the tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining scores, Schirmer 1 test, biomicroscopic examination of lid margins and meibomian gland (MG), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire score, and extracellular MMP-9 levels using a point-of-care MMP-9 immunoassay device before and 4 weeks after lid debris debridement and MGX.

The aim of this study was to evaluate astigmatic correction in patients with mild to moderate astigmatism after combined femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and intrastromal arcuate keratotomy (ISAK), using vector analysis. This retrospective study included patients with corneal astigmatism of 0.5-3.

: To test the hypothesis that ocular pigment in patients with oculodermal melanocytosis decreases myopia severity.: Refractive and biometric parameters were measured and compared between pigmented eyes and non-pigmented contralateral eyes in oculodermal melanocytosis patients that underwent surgical ocular pigmentation removal. To assess pigmentation, the pigmentation score was measured in each quadrant of the sclera and added together for a cumulative score.

The resident participatory ecosystem service assessment is a method for determining local situations through the ecological knowledge of residents who most closely experience changes in local ecosystems. This is an opportunity for residents to synthesize their environmental knowledge. It provides valuable research material for researchers, can be utilized as a pathway for civil servants to reflect residents' opinions on policy, and can help environmental organizations instill environmental awareness and develop environmental public opinions in residents.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transplantation with human corneal limbal epithelial (HCLE) cell sheets cultured on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-dopamine (DA)-coated substrates and harvested via enzymatic digestion of CMC with cellulase in a rabbit animal model of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Synthesized CMC-DA was pretreated onto the surface of culture plates. Then, HCLE cells were cultured on precoated CMC-DA and HCLE cell sheets were harvested using cellulase-containing cell culture medium.

Article Synopsis
  • Two simultaneous COVID-19 outbreaks were studied in Daegu, South Korea, focusing on a church and a long-term care facility to understand the disease's epidemiology and outcomes.
  • Among 694 patients, 19.7% had severe cases, with no severe cases in those aged 19 or younger; hypertension was the most common comorbidity.
  • The study found that mass screening and early treatment may have contributed to a low overall mortality rate in the region.

We report proteogenomic analysis of diffuse gastric cancers (GCs) in young populations. Phosphoproteome data elucidated signaling pathways associated with somatic mutations based on mutation-phosphorylation correlations. Moreover, correlations between mRNA and protein abundances provided potential oncogenes and tumor suppressors associated with patient survival.
