A MALDI-MS-based quantitative analytical method for endogenous estrone in human breast cancer cells.

The level of endogenous estrone, one of the three major naturally occurring estrogens, has a significant correlation with the incidence of post-menopausal breast cancer. However, it is challenging to quantitatively monitor it owing to its low abundance. Here, we develop a robust and highly sensitive mass-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS)-based quantitative platform to identify the absolute quantities of endogenous estrones in a variety of clinical specimens.

Epidemiologic Aspects of Medical Retirement from the Republic of Korea Army due to Visual Impairment.

This study was done to report the epidemiologic characteristics of medical retirement from the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army due to visual impairment and to suggest a practical screening system for the draft. The medical records of 423 eyes of 301 patients who retired from the ROK Army due to visual impairment were reviewed retrospectively between January 2010 and December 2014. The patients were grouped by the presence of trauma, and each group was subdivided by military rank.

Thermo-triggerable self-assembly comprising cinnamoyl polymeric β cyclodextrin and cinnamoyl Pluronic F127.

Thermo-triggerable self-assembly was prepared by co-dissolving cinnamoyl Pluronic F127 (CinPlu) and cinnamoyl polymeric β cyclodextrin (CinPβCD) in an aqueous phase. On TEM photo, the CinPlu/CinPβCD self-assembly was 100-200nm in diameter. The specific loading of Nile red (NR) in the assembly was calculated to be 5.

Alginate Sulfates Mitigate Binding Kinetics of Proangiogenic Growth Factors with Receptors toward Revascularization.

Ever since proangiogenic growth factors have been used as a vascular medicine to treat tissue ischemia, efforts have been increasingly made to develop a method to enhance efficacy of growth factors in recreating microvascular networks, especially at low dose. To this end, we hypothesized that polysaccharides substituted with sulfate groups would amplify growth factor receptor activation and stimulate phenotypic activities of endothelial cells involved in neovascularization. We examined this hypothesis by modifying alginate with a controlled number of sulfates and using it to derive a complex with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), as confirmed with fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay.

Clinical factors affecting intraocular pressure change after orbital decompression surgery in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

Objective: To report the physiological monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) during the postoperative periods after orbital decompression surgery and ascertain the correlation between the clinical factors and IOP changes.

Methods: The medical records of 113 orbits from 60 patients who underwent orbital decompression surgery were reviewed retrospectively. IOP measurement during the postoperative periods was classified based on the postoperative day: week 1 (1-7 days), month 1 (8-41 days), month 2 (42-70 days), month 3 (71-97 days), month 4 (98-126 days), and final (after 127 days).

Associations between CYP2A6 polymorphisms and outcomes of adjuvant S-1 chemotherapy in patients with curatively resected gastric cancer.

Background: Oral fluoropyrimidine S-1 contains tegafur, which is metabolized to 5-fluorouracil by cytochrome P450 2A6 (CYP2A6). We here examined associations between CYP2A6 polymorphisms and treatment outcomes of adjuvant S-1 in gastric cancer patients.

Methods: Patients received adjuvant S-1 (40 mg/m twice daily, days 1-28, every 6 weeks for eight cycles) after curative surgery for pathological stage II-III gastric cancer.

A Multicenter Noncomparative Clinical Study on Midface Rejuvenation Using a Nonabsorbable Polypropylene Mesh: Evaluation of Efficacy and Safety.

Background: Facial rejuvenation can be achieved using a variety of techniques. Since minimally invasive procedures for face lifting have become popular because of their convenience and short operating time, numerous minimally invasive surgical procedures have been developed. In this study, a nonabsorbable polypropylene mesh is introduced as a new face lifting instrument, with the nasolabial fold as the main target area.

The relationships between empathy, stress and social support among medical students.

Objective: To examine the relationship between stress, social support, and empathy among medical students.

Methods: We evaluated the relationships between stress and empathy, and social support and empathy among medical students. The respondents completed a questionnaire including demographic information, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support.

The Study of Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children.

The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children (TSCYC) including reliability and validity. The TSCYC is an instrument to identify trauma symptoms in children from age 3 to 12 yr by their caretakers. The Korean version of the TSCYC was administered to the caretakers of a normative group of 299 children (137 boys and 162 girls) aged 3 to 12 yr and a traumatized group of 73 sexually abused children (22 boys and 51 girls) aged 3 to 12 yr and their caretakers rated the TSCYC and the Child Behavior Checklist and the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory.

The Korean Version of the Pediatric Symptom Checklist: Psychometric Properties in Korean School-aged Children.

Psychosocial problems increase the risk for mental health problems and increase the need for health care services in children and adolescents. Primary care practice is a valuable avenue for identifying the need for more specialized mental health care. We hypothesized that Korean version of the pediatric symptom checklist (PSC) would be a useful tool for early detection of psychosocial problems in children and adolescents in Korea and we aimed to suggest cut-off scores for detecting meaningful psychosocial problems.

Exacerbation of collagen antibody-induced arthritis in transgenic mice overexpressing peroxiredoxin 6.

Objective: Peroxiredoxin 6 plays important and complex roles in the process of inflammation, but its role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. We undertook this study to investigate the roles and mechanisms of peroxiredoxin 6 in the development of collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA) and antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) in peroxiredoxin 6-overexpressing transgenic mice, in peroxiredoxin 6-transfected RAW 264.7 cells, in macrophages isolated from peroxiredoxin 6-overexpressing transgenic mice, and in synoviocytes from arthritis patients.

Objective: Successful arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation is often challenging in obese patients. Optimal initial intraoperative blood flow (IOBF) is essential for adequate AVF maturation. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of obesity on IOBF and radiocephalic AVF maturation.

Poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) core-shell microspheres with enhanced controllability of drug encapsulation and release rate.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres have been widely used as drug carriers for minimally invasive, local, and sustained drug delivery. However, their use is often plagued by limited controllability of encapsulation efficiency, initial burst, and release rate of drug molecules, which cause unsatisfactory outcomes and several side effects including inflammation. This study presents a new strategy of tuning the encapsulation efficiency and the release rate of protein drugs from a PLGA microsphere by filling the hollow core of the microsphere with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels of varying cross-linking density.

Objective: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis is critical in maintaining body temperature. The dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) integrates cutaneous thermosensory signals and regulates adaptive thermogenesis. Here, we study the function and synaptic connectivity of input from DMH cholinergic neurons to sympathetic premotor neurons in the raphe pallidus (Rpa).

Evaluation of the levator veli palatini muscle thickness in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome using magnetic resonance imaging.

Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is associated with velopharyngeal insufficiency, which occurs in approximately 75% of VCFS patients. Surgical management of velopharyngeal insufficiency in VCFS patients is difficult with a high revision rate due to the anatomic and physiological abnormalities of the velopharynx. The aims of this study were to evaluate the thickness and symmetry of the levator veli palatini (LVP) muscle using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to compare the findings in VCFS patients to those in patients with nonsyndromic submucous cleft palate.

Interplay between glucose and leptin signalling determines the strength of GABAergic synapses at POMC neurons.

Regulation of GABAergic inhibitory inputs and alterations in POMC neuron activity by nutrients and adiposity signals regulate energy and glucose homeostasis. Long-term results of surgical angioplasty for left main coronary artery stenosis: 18-year follow-up.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the long-term outcomes of surgical angioplasty for left main coronary artery (SA-LMCA) stenosis.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 24 consecutive patients (mean age, 55 years; male/female, 12/12) who underwent a surgical angioplasty for the left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis at our institution between 1995 and 2002. We used autologous pericardium in 7 patients and bovine pericardium in 17 patients as a patch.

L-Asparaginase delivered by Salmonella typhimurium suppresses solid tumors.

Bacteria can be engineered to deliver anticancer proteins to tumors via a controlled expression system that maximizes the concentration of the therapeutic agent in the tumor. L-asparaginase (L-ASNase), which primarily converts asparagine to aspartate, is an anticancer protein used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In this study, Salmonellae were engineered to express L-ASNase selectively within tumor tissues using the inducible araBAD promoter system of Escherichia coli.

Argon laser photoablation for postburn conjunctival pigmentation.

We report a case of an ocular burn injury from boiling water which resulted in conjunctival pigmentation, 1 week following injury. For cosmetic purposes, 2 sessions of argon laser photoablation were performed. One month after laser treatment, conjunctival pigmentation had been successfully removed and the patient was very satisfied with the results.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in near-drowning patients with cardiac or pulmonary failure.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the early outcomes of using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in near-drowning patients with cardiac or pulmonary failure.

Methods: This study was based on data from 9 patients including 2 children (mean age 33; 8 males, 1 female) who received ECMO after near-drowning between 2008 and 2013. Veno-arterial or veno-arteriovenous ECMO was used in 2 patients with sustained cardiac arrest and veno-venous ECMO was used in 7 patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Improvement of photoaged skin wrinkles with cultured human fibroblasts and adipose-derived stem cells: a comparative study.

We investigated the antiwrinkle effects of cultured human fibroblasts and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and the mechanisms underlying the reduction of wrinkles in photoaged skin. The fibroblasts and ADSCs were isolated from human tissue and cultured. A total of 28 6-week-old female BALB/c nude mice were classified into four groups, including the normal control group and three groups that were irradiated six times a week for 6-weeks using ultraviolet B radiation to induce photoaged wrinkles.
