Objective: High recurrence rates in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) significantly affect prognosis, especially in radioresistant HNSCC (RR-HNSCC). Nonthermal plasma (NTP) therapy can effectively suppress the progression of HNSCC; however, the therapeutic mechanism of NTP therapy for RR-HNSCC remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the regulatory role of NTP in the RR-HNSCC signaling pathway and identified its signature genes.

  • The study investigates the impact of gross strap muscle invasion (gSMI) in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients, a factor that could influence patient prognosis, particularly regarding tumor size.
  • The research involved a meta-analysis of 18 observational studies to evaluate the association between gSMI and outcomes like recurrence, disease-specific mortality, and lymph node metastasis.
  • Findings indicate that patients with gSMI have worse prognostic outcomes, but this effect is less pronounced for tumors that are 4 cm or smaller, suggesting a need for careful treatment strategies based on tumor size.

Metastasis is the primary stumbling block to the treatment of bladder cancer (BC). In order to spread, tumor cells must acquire increased migratory and invasive capacity, which is tightly linked with pseudopodia formation. Here, we unravel the effects of sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate in cruciferous vegetables, on the assembly of pseudopodia and BC metastasis, and its molecular mechanism in the process.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging modality in biomedical imaging with superior imaging depth and specificity. However, PAI still has significant limitations, such as the background noise from endogenous chromophores. To overcome these limitations, we developed a covalent activity-based PAI probe, NOx-JS013, targeting NCEH1.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to investigate how the time between bowel cleansing completion and colonoscopy affects the quality of bowel preparation, as previous studies suggested shorter intervals might be better, but no RCT had directly tested this.
  • - Participants were divided into two groups based on completion times: 2-4 hours and 4-8 hours before the colonoscopy, with success measured using the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS).
  • - Results showed the 2-4 hour group had similar overall bowel cleansing success (97.6%) to the 4-8 hour group (95.2%), but significantly more participants achieved perfect cleansing in the shorter interval group (56.5% vs. 39.8%).

  • Active surveillance (AS) is considered a suitable alternative to immediate surgery for small papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), particularly for tumors ≤1.0 cm without risk factors, and this study looked at PTCs up to 2.0 cm without lymph node metastasis.
  • The research involved 935 T1N0 patients who underwent surgery over two years, revealing that tumors sized between 1.0 cm and 1.5 cm (cT1b≤1.5) showed more lymphatic invasion and hidden lymph node metastasis compared to smaller tumors (cT1a).
  • For patients aged 55 and older with tumors ≤1.5 cm, AS appears to be a feasible option, as

InP/ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) stand as promising candidates for advancing QD-organic light-emitting diodes (QLED), but low emission efficiency due to their susceptibility to oxidation impedes applications. Structural defects play important roles in the emission efficiency degradation of QDs, but the formation mechanism of defects in oxidized QDs has been less investigated. Here, we investigated the impact of diverse structural defects formation on individual QDs and propagation during UV-facilitated oxidation using high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy.

The role of the serine/glycine metabolic pathway (SGP) has recently been demonstrated in tumors; however, the pathological relevance of the SGP in thyroid cancer remains unexplored. Here, we perform metabolomic profiling of 17 tumor-normal pairs; bulk transcriptomics of 263 normal thyroid, 348 papillary, and 21 undifferentiated thyroid cancer samples; and single-cell transcriptomes from 15 cases, showing the impact of mitochondrial one-carbon metabolism in thyroid tumors. High expression of serine hydroxymethyltransferase-2 (SHMT2) and methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase 2 (MTHFD2) is associated with low thyroid differentiation scores and poor clinical features.
