Article Synopsis
  • - The study addresses the increasing demand for liver transplants (LT) and the trend of using older donor livers, which is traditionally thought to provide poorer outcomes compared to younger livers.
  • - The research analyzed 656 liver transplants to evaluate the effects of donor age using advanced statistical methods, comparing outcomes between patients receiving livers from donors aged 75 and older versus those 45 and younger.
  • - Results indicated no significant impact of donor age on patient survival post-transplant, suggesting that older liver grafts may be as viable as those from younger donors, challenging prior assumptions.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, prompted by the accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins, triggers the activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway to restore ER homeostasis. This stress response is implicated in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A biallelic mutation in SPRTN is currently the only known single-gene mutation implicated in the early onset of HCC.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading indications for liver transplantation (LT) however, selection criteria remain controversial. We aimed to identify survival factors and predictors for tumour recurrence using machine learning (ML) methods. We also compared ML models to the Cox regression model.

Article Synopsis
  • Human alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) has been increasingly reported in central Croatia over the past two decades, marking a new epidemiological focus.
  • Between 2019 and 2022, six autochthonous HAE cases were identified, particularly in Bjelovar-Bilogora County, affecting mainly middle-aged individuals with significant liver lesions.
  • The prevalence of HAE in local red foxes was recorded at 11.24%, highlighting the need for health screening programs and preventive veterinary measures in the region.

: Liver transplantation (LT) is the most effective treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease, which dramatically effects patient's quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of socio-demographic and clinical factors on different QoL domains of patients who underwent orthotopic LT. : A cross-sectional study included a total of 43 patients who underwent a LT from 2013 to 2018.

As the current demand for liver transplantation exceeds our donor pool, the donor search is shifted towards the extended donor criteria. The livers harbouring hydatid disease are a controversial source of grafts. We report the use of a liver graft harbouring hydatid disease in urgent liver transplantation in a patient with autoimmune hepatitis.

Background: Refractory ascites is a rare complication following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The broad spectrum of differential diagnosis often leads to delay in diagnosis. Therapy depends on recognition and treatment of the underlying cause.

Background: Paraduodenal pancreatitis (PP) is a rare form of chronic pancreatitis presenting with symptoms of duodenal obstruction. Conservative treatment is often unsuccessful and pancreaticoduodenectomy is the preferred surgical approach. A mini review of the outcomes of surgical therapy for PP shows that the results of pancreaticoduodenectomy are predominantly favorable.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third leading cause of cancer-related death. It is currently one of the leading indications for liver transplant, with selected 5-year survival rates after liver transplant of about 70%. Despite excellent results of liver transplant for hepatocellular carcinoma, a number of patients develop metastases after transplant, and multifocal metastatic disease is the most frequent cause of death.

Introduction: Vasculobiliary injury composed of bile duct, portal vein and hepatic artery injury is a rare, but the most severe, complication after cholecystectomy that may require hepatectomy or even urgent liver transplantation.

Case Presentation: We present a case of a 36-year-old Caucasian woman with a biliary sepsis and a large right liver lobe abscess due to an extreme vasculobiliary injury after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Bismuth type IV biliary duct injury, portal vein thrombosis and injury of right hepatic artery were identified, resulting in life-threatening septic episodes.

Novel affinity-purified antibodies against human SGLT1 (hSGLT1) and SGLT2 (hSGLT2) were used to localize hSGLT2 in human kidney and hSGLT1 in human kidney, small intestine, liver, lung, and heart. The renal locations of both transporters largely resembled those in rats and mice; hSGLT2 and SGLT1 were localized to the brush border membrane (BBM) of proximal tubule S1/S2 and S3 segments, respectively. Different to rodents, the renal expression of hSGLT1 was absent in thick ascending limb of Henle (TALH) and macula densa, and the expression of both hSGLTs was sex-independent.

We present a case of long-term survival of a patient who underwent living-donor liver transplantation for unresectable liver metastases of colon cancer. Two years after left hemicolectomy and subsequent to repeated liver resections, this patient presented with unresectable metastatic disease confined to the liver. She was offered a living-donor liver transplantation, and her husband agreed to be the donor.

Article Synopsis
  • Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and core needle biopsy (CNB) are useful for diagnosing focal liver lesions, but can sometimes lead to complications like cancer cell spreading along the needle path.
  • A case study describes a 57-year-old man who developed a subcutaneous tumor 25 months after liver transplantation, linked to previous HCC biopsy procedures.
  • The report aims to highlight the clinical implications of needle tract seeding in HCC patients post-transplantation, along with challenges in diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

Multifocal epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the liver is a rare primary tumor with a variable course of disease. A case is presented of a 27-year-old female patient with multiple hepatic lesions on ultrasonography, suspect of metastatic tumor of the liver. Serum tumor markers were not elevated, while clinical examination of the lungs, gastrointestinal and gynecologic systems did not confirm the presence of a primary tumor process.

Solid pseudo-papillary tumors (SPT) are rare primary tumors of the pancreas that primarily affect young women. They are of borderline malignancy, and, unlike other pancreatic malignancies, the prognosis after resection is quite good. However, metastatic disease does occur; the liver is the most common site of tumor dissemination.

We report a case of acute liver ischemia resulting in liver failure that occurred due to celiac trunk occlusion by an aortic dissection. A 53-year-old patient presented with clinical signs of acute abdomen. He underwent an urgent laparotomy, which revealed a splenic infarction and thrombosis of the celiac artery all the way to the porta hepatis.

We report a case of orthotopic liver retransplantation (OLRT) in a patient who was suffering from rejection and graft failure after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The patient was a 32-year old female who had diagnosed liver lesion--hepatic cirrhosis. Within two months, with presented condition as a terminal stage of her disease, she underwent the OLT and immunosuppressive postoperative management.

Recently, the effectiveness of pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and other anti-ulcer agents, called 'direct cytoprotection', was evidenced in totally gastrectomized rats duodenum challenged with cysteamine 24 h after surgery, and sacrificed 24 h after ulcerogen application. The further focus was on the possibility that this effect could be seen over a more prolonged period (1, 2, 4 weeks), and in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract (i.e.
