Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the characteristics and demographics of patients with hand burn injuries admitted to a burn center in New York City from August 2020 to December 2023.
  • 96 patients were identified, with a median age of 38; the study found that females tended to seek treatment later and were more often injured by flames.
  • Key findings indicated higher rates of psychiatric issues, substance use, and smoking among homeless patients, and a correlation between length of follow-up and household income, emphasizing the unique risk factors associated with hand burn injuries in urban settings.

Ribosomes are macromolecular RNA-protein complexes that constitute the central machinery responsible for protein synthesis and quality control in the cell. Ribosomes also serve as a hub for multiple non-ribosomal proteins and RNAs that control protein synthesis. However, the purification of ribosomes and associated factors for functional and structural studies requires a large amount of starting biological material and a tedious workflow.

Background: Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria-causing parasite, is a leading cause of infection-induced deaths worldwide. The preferred treatment approach is artemisinin-based combination therapy, which couples fast-acting artemisinin derivatives with longer-acting drugs, such as lumefantrine, mefloquine, and amodiaquine. However, the urgency for new treatments has risen due to the parasite's growing resistance to existing therapies.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common heart muscle disorder that frequently leads to heart failure, arrhythmias, and death. While DCM is often heritable, disease-causing mutations are identified in only ~30% of cases. In a forward genetic mutagenesis screen, we identified a novel zebrafish mutant, (), characterized by early-onset cardiomyopathy and craniofacial defects.

Endometriosis is a leading cause of pain and infertility affecting millions of women globally. Herein, we characterize variation in DNA methylation (DNAm) and its association with menstrual cycle phase, endometriosis, and genetic variants through analysis of genotype data and methylation in endometrial samples from 984 deeply-phenotyped participants. We estimate that 15.

Background And Aims: Genetic risk can influence disease progression. We measured the impact of genetic risk for substance use disorders (SUDs) on substance use onset and progression of symptoms.

Design, Setting, Participants: Using findings from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of alcohol use disorder (AUD), opioid use disorder (OUD) and smoking trajectory (SMK) as discovery samples, we calculated polygenic risk scores (PRSs) in a deeply phenotyped independent target sample.

Background: Low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress have been implicated as potential pathophysiological processes in bipolar disorder, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Ferritin is a marker of iron stores and involved in redox processes and inflammation but its role in bipolar disorder is unclear.

Methods: We investigated the possible association of increased plasma ferritin levels and bipolar disorder.

Introduction: Whilst risk management has become fundamental in the development of medical devices, enforced by regulations and international standards, there is still no comprehensive model that explains how risk management in medical devices' development should be tackled, especially with regard to the type of risks that should be addressed. Risk management in the medical devices' development field is currently focused on technical risks, comprising product, usability, and development process risks, in alignment with standards' requirements and regulations, without giving enough attention to non-technical risks, which include business and project risks. Start-ups within this heavily regulated domain have a key role in the innovation process, yet they suffer a structural lack of tangible, such as financial capacity, and intangible resources such as development, risk management, and regulations' compliance.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the usage of various types of face masks. In addition, it triggered the rapid manufacture of new production lines of masks to cope with the unprecedented demand to overcome worldwide shortages. Such masks, which were previously used mostly by the health care personnel, became a daily necessity to the greater mainstream population.

The UJA Covid-19 Jewish Impact Study constitutes a random sample of 4403 adults in Jewish households in the New York area. Collected between February and May 2021, the data include symptoms of depression and anxiety and the use of professional help. Via respondents' zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs), these data are linked to contextual measures of mental health care access from two data sources: the SAMHSA Locator on specialty community treatment clinics, and the Zip Code Business Patterns database on solo and small group practices.

Objective: To review the evidence of felt and enacted stigma and attitudes toward persons living with epilepsy, and their determining factors.

Methods: Thirteen databases were searched (1985-2019). Abstracts were reviewed in duplicate and data were independently extracted using a standardized form.

Objective: This is a systematic review aimed at summarizing the evidence related to instruments that have been developed to measure stigma or attitudes toward epilepsy and on stigma-reducing interventions.

Methods: This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards. A broad literature search (1985-2019) was performed in 13 databases.

Start-ups that are involved in the development of medical devices play a key role in innovation, yet among the several limitations they encounter, they suffer a lack of knowledge in quality management. This lack may create a challenge that could hinder or limit their success. This paper seeks to present an overview and act as a guideline for the required documentation to establish a quality management system for start-ups in medical devices development, based on a case-studied start-up, in accordance with ISO 13485.

Background: Gender-affirming surgery is becoming increasingly more common. Procedures including chest masculinization, breast augmentation, vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, and phalloplasty routinely generate discarded tissue. The incidence of finding an occult malignancy or premalignant lesion in specimens from gender-affirming surgery is unknown.

Background: Authors have speculated that vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) recipients may require greater maintenance immunosuppression than solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients due to the higher antigenicity of skin. However, detailed comparisons of VCA and SOT immunosuppression regimens have been limited.

Methods: Hand and face VCA recipient immunosuppression data were collected through a systematic literature review.

: The overarching goal of this project was to establish a group comprised of a variety of TBI stakeholders for the purpose of: (1) determining facilitators and barriers in management of neuropsychiatric symptoms after TBI; (2) identifying strategies for maintaining a TBI PCOR network; (3) enumerating research topics related to TBI neuropsychiatry; and (4) highlighting policy changes related to TBI neuropsychiatry.: Twenty-nine TBI stakeholders participated in focus group discussions. Qualitative analyses were conducted both manually and using Dedoose software.

Unlabelled: The "Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet" (WALANT) technique is gaining popularity in hand surgery owing to its benefits of reduced cost, shorter hospital stay, improved safety, and the ability to perform active intraoperative examinations. The aim of this study is to analyze the cost savings and efficiency of performing A1 pulley release for treatment of trigger finger using the WALANT technique in a major city hospital procedure room (PR) as compared with the standard tourniquet, operating room (OR) approach.

Methods: Patients who underwent trigger finger release between 2012 and 2017 were identified.
