Epilepsy affects nearly 3 million people in the United States alone. Given the fact that many people suffer from seizures that are intractable to pharmacological intervention, research groups are investigating the use of electrical stimulation to interact with and ameliorate symptoms of epileptic seizures. The purpose of this study was to examine how children express their experiences of feeling unsafe in school. Questions guiding the study were What percentage of children in this sample report feeling unsafe at school? What are the aftereffects of feeling unsafe? and How do children describe what makes them feel unsafe? Participants included 243 fifth-grade students who, as part of their participation in a larger study, were asked, "Have you felt unsafe at school?" Children responding affirmatively described what made them feel unsafe.

To explore roles for connexin36 (Cx36) gap junctions in seizures, we examined the seizure threshold of connexin36 knockout (Cx36KO) mice using a pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) model.
Methods: Mice (2-3months old) with Cx36 wildtype (WT) or Cx36KO genotype were treated with vehicle or 10-40mg/kg of the convulsant PTZ by intraperitoneal injection.
Gap junctions within the cerebral cortex may facilitate cortical seizure formation by their ability to synchronize electrical activity. To investigate this, one option is to compare wild-type (WT) animals with those lacking the gene for connexin36 (Cx36 KO); the protein that forms neuronal gap junctions between cortical inhibitory cells. However, genetically modified knock-out animals may exhibit compensatory effects; with the risk that observed differences between WT and Cx36 KO animals could be erroneously attributed to Cx36 gap junction effects.

NRSF isoforms regulate genes associated with SSSE, including the proconvulsant tachykinins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and multiple ion channels. NRSF isoforms may direct distinct gene expression patterns during SSSE, and the ratio of each isoform may be a causative factor in traumatic damage to the central nervous system.

Many GABAergic anaesthetics reduce gap junction coupling but it is currently unknown whether this effect contributes to anaesthetic anticonvulsant action. The major challenge for physicians has been to recognize when a Medicare beneficiary has coverage versus when that patient is in the "doughnut hole" where Medicare beneficiaries do not have coverage and therefore have to pay the full cost of the drugs out-of-pocket. A second challenge is that different Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in different drug plans, and drugs that are covered in some plans are not covered in other plans.
