Background: Inhalation exposure is the gold standard when assessing pulmonary toxicity. However, it typically requires substantial amounts of test material. Intratracheal instillation is an alternative administration technique, where the test substance is suspended in a liquid vehicle and deposited into the lung via the trachea.

Purpose: Fluorine-18 prostate-specific membrane antigen-1007 positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT) has been shown to be superior to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the locoregional staging of intermediate-risk and high-risk prostate tumors. This study aims to evaluate whether it is also superior in estimating tumor parameters, such as three-dimensional spatial localization and volume.

Methods: 134 participants underwent F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT and MRI prior to radical prostatectomy as part of the validating paired-cohort Next Generation Trial (NCT05141760).

Preprocessing is necessary to extract meaningful results from electroencephalography (EEG) data. With many possible preprocessing choices, their impact on outcomes is fundamental. While previous studies have explored the effects of preprocessing on stationary EEG data, this research delves into mobile EEG, where complex processing is necessary to address motion artifacts.

Understanding the biokinetics of nanoparticles will support the identification of target organs for toxicological endpoints. We investigated the biokinetics of poorly soluble nanomaterials carbon black, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), cerium oxide (CeO), titanium dioxide (TiO), crystalline silica (SiO) in inhalation studies in rodents (the soluble amorphous silica was also included). By reviewing research papers on the inhalation of these substances, we collected physico-chemical data and elemental distribution to organs, urine, and feces.

Article Synopsis
  • Van der Waals heterostructures allow for the customization of electronic properties by combining two-dimensional materials, particularly bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).
  • The study confirms two types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in bilayer graphene when in contact with molybdenum disulfide: Ising and Rashba coupling, with respective energy values of 1.55 meV and 2.5 meV.
  • Observations include a unique pattern in conductivity as the electric displacement field changes, attributed to Ising SOC-induced gaps, and noticeable spikes in magnetoconductivity that challenge current theoretical understandings.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the effects of low-dose atropine treatment on choroidal thickness changes in Danish children aged 6-12 with myopia over a period of 2 years and a subsequent 1-year wash-out compared to a placebo group.
  • The results showed that children with longer axial lengths had thinner choroidal thickness at baseline, but there were no significant changes in choroidal thickness for the atropine groups compared to placebo after 3 years.
  • Overall, the findings suggested that choroidal thickness remained stable in these children during the follow-up period, with a thinner choroid possibly leading to increased axial elongation in myopia.

Measuring the compaction of a protein or complex is key to our understanding of the interactions within and between biomolecules. Experimentally, protein compaction is often probed either by estimating the radius of gyration (R) obtained from small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments or the hydrodynamic radius (R) obtained, for example, by pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG NMR) spectroscopy. PFG NMR experiments generally report on the translational diffusion coefficient, which in turn can be used to estimate R using an internal standard to account for sample viscosity and uncertainty about the gradient strength.

Introduction: The dominance of the biomedical approach has previously caused a limited focus on occupation within hand therapy. This study aimed to investigate the rehabilitation offered to patients with a hand-related disorder (HRD) in Denmark including to determine the extent to which occupation-focused and/or occupation-based assessments and interventions are used and to identify barriers against their use.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey with 45 questions was conducted among members of the Danish Association for Hand Therapy.

Acute injury of skeletal muscle disrupts myofibres, microvessels and motor innervation. Myofibre regeneration is well characterized, however its relationship with the regeneration of microvessels and motor nerves is undefined. Endothelial cell (EC) ephrin-B2 (Efnb2) is required for angiogenesis during embryonic development and promotes neurovascular regeneration in the adult.

Bernal bilayer graphene has recently been discovered to exhibit a wide range of unique ordered phases resulting from interaction-driven effects and encompassing spin and valley magnetism, correlated insulators, correlated metals, and superconductivity. This Letter reports on a novel family of correlated phases characterized by spin and valley ordering, distinct from those reported previously. These phases emerge in electron-doped bilayer graphene where the energy bands are exceptionally flat, manifested through an intriguing nonlinear current-bias behavior that occurs at the onset of the phases and is accompanied by an insulating temperature dependence.

Studies on in vitro-in vivo correlations of inflammatory and genotoxic responses are needed to advance new approach methodologies. Here, we assessed pro-inflammatory and genotoxic responses by 13 nanosized metal oxides (nMeOx) and quartz (DQ12) in alveolar epithelial cells (A549) and macrophages (THP-1a) exposed in submerged conditions, and in A549:THP-1a co-cultures in air-liquid interface (ALI) system. Soluble nMeOx produced the highest IL-8 expression in A549 and THP-1a cells in submerged conditions (≥2-fold, p < 0.

Importance: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) demonstrates overexpression in prostate cancer and correlates with tumor aggressiveness. PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) is superior to conventional imaging for the metastatic staging of prostate cancer per current research but studies of second-generation PSMA PET radioligands for locoregional staging are limited.

Objective: To determine the accuracy of fluorine-18 PSMA-1007 PET/computed tomography (18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT) compared to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the primary locoregional staging of intermediate-risk and high-risk prostate cancers.

Individuals exhibit significant variability in their ability to adapt locomotor skills, with some adapting quickly and others more slowly. Differences in brain activity likely contribute to this variability, but direct neural evidence is lacking. We investigated individual differences in electrocortical activity that led to faster locomotor adaptation rates.

Locomotor adaptation to abrupt and gradual perturbations are likely driven by fundamentally different neural processes. The aim of this study was to quantify brain dynamics associated with gait adaptation to a gradually introduced gait perturbation, which typically results in smaller behavioral errors relative to an abrupt perturbation. Loss of balance during standing and walking elicits transient increases in midfrontal theta oscillations that have been shown to scale with perturbation intensity.

Balancing is a very important skill, supporting many daily life activities. Cognitive-motor interference (CMI) dual-tasking paradigms have been established to identify the cognitive load of complex natural motor tasks, such as running and cycling. Here we used wireless, smartphone-recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and motion sensors while participants were either standing on firm ground or on a slackline, either performing an auditory oddball task (dual-task condition) or no task simultaneously (single-task condition).

Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) offers a highly flexible platform for tuning the band structure, featuring two distinct regimes. One is a tunable band gap induced by large displacement fields. Another is a gapless metallic band occurring at low fields, featuring rich fine structure consisting of four linearly dispersing Dirac cones and van Hove singularities.

The evolution of land flora was an epochal event in the history of planet Earth. The success of plants, and especially flowering plants, in colonizing all but the most hostile environments required multiple mechanisms of adaptation. The mainly polysaccharide-based cell walls of flowering plants, which are indispensable for water transport and structural support, are one of the most important adaptations to life on land.

The heterohexameric ATPases associated with diverse cellular activities (AAA)-ATPase Pex1/Pex6 is essential for the formation and maintenance of peroxisomes. Pex1/Pex6, similar to other AAA-ATPases, uses the energy from ATP hydrolysis to mechanically thread substrate proteins through its central pore, thereby unfolding them. In related AAA-ATPase motors, substrates are recruited through binding to the motor's N-terminal domains or N terminally bound cofactors.

Article Synopsis
  • Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is commonly used in muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients but can lead to renal toxicity, and radical cystectomy (RC) itself is a risk factor for renal injury.
  • An analysis of 234 patients showed a significant decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) after receiving NAC, with a 17% decline and an increase in chronic kidney disease stage ≥3 from 27% to 50% one year after surgery.
  • In comparison, a control group that underwent RC without NAC had a smaller eGFR decline of 6% and a baseline higher incidence of stage ≥3 CKD, highlighting the renal risks associated with NAC prior to surgery
