Prebiotic and panthenol-containing dermocosmetic improves tolerance from artificial daylight photodynamic therapy: A randomized controlled trial in patients with actinic keratosis.

Introduction & Objectives: Treatment with daylight photodynamic therapy (dPDT) of actinic keratosis (AK) is associated with local skin reactions (LSR), which may affect patients' quality of life and treatment acceptability. This study explores the potential of a prebiotic and panthenol-containing Dermocosmetic Cream (DC) to enhance tolerance and mitigate post-dPDT induced LSR in the treatment of AKs.

Materials & Methods: This randomized controlled, intra-individual trial included 20 patients with ≥10 AKs in two symmetrical areas on their face or décolleté, treated with a single session of artificial dPDT.

Misgendering and the health and wellbeing of nonbinary people in Canada.

Misgendering-using the wrong name, pronoun, or gendered language to refer to someone-is known to have negative impacts on the mental health and well-being of trans individuals generally. However, little is known about the effects of misgendering on nonbinary people specifically. As such, our research asked: 1) Among nonbinary people, what factors are associated with frequency of misgendering?; and 2) Do nonbinary people who experience misgendering less often have better health outcomes? We analyzed data from Trans PULSE Canada, a community-based survey of trans and nonbinary people living in Canada, using a subset ( = 1091) who identified as nonbinary and completed questions on misgendering.

Prevalence of Antibodies against Adeno-Associated Viruses (AAVs) in Göttingen Minipigs and Its Implications for Gene Therapy and Xenotransplantation.

Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) are widely used as delivery vectors in clinical trials for in vivo gene therapy due to their unique features. Göttingen minipigs are a well-established animal model for several diseases and can be used for the efficacy and safety testing of AAV-based gene therapy. Pre-existing antibodies against AAV may influence the results of testing and, therefore, the animals should be tested for the presence of antibodies against relevant AAV serotypes.

Temperature-dependent alterations in the proteome of the emergent fish pathogen Edwardsiella piscicida.

Edwardsiella piscicida is an emerging bacterial pathogen and the aetiological agent of edwardsiellosis among cultured and wild fish species globally. The increased frequency of outbreaks of this Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogen pose not only a threat to the aquaculture industry but also a possible foodborne/waterborne public health risk due to the ill-defined zoonotic potential. Thus, understanding the role of temperature on the virulence of this emerging pathogen is essential for comprehending the pathogenesis of piscine edwardsiellosis in the context of current warming trends associated with climate change, as well as providing insight into its zoonotic potential.

Planetary health learning objectives: foundational knowledge for global health education in an era of climate change.

Planetary health is an emerging field that emphasises that humans depend on a healthy Earth for survival and, conversely, that the sustainability of Earth systems is dependent on human behaviours. In response to member demands for resources to support teaching and learning related to planetary health, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) convened a working group to develop a set of planetary health learning objectives (PHLOs) that would complement the existing ten CUGH global health learning objectives. The eight PHLOs feature Earth system changes, planetary boundaries, and climate change science; ecological systems and One Health; human health outcomes; risk assessment, vulnerability, and resilience; policy, governance, and laws (including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement); roles and responsibilities of governments, businesses, civil society organisations, other institutions, communities, and individuals for mitigation, adaptation, conservation, restoration, and sustainability; environmental ethics, human rights, and climate justice; and environmental literacy and communication.

Development of a novel oncolytic adenovirus controlled by CDX2 promoter for esophageal adenocarcinoma therapy.

Background: Prognosis of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is still poor. Therefore, the development of novel therapeutic modalities is necessary to improve therapeutic outcomes in EAC. Here, we report a novel promoter-controlled oncolytic adenovirus targeting CDX2 (Ad5/3-pCDX2) and its specific anticancer effect for EAC.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor ( AHRR ) methylation predicts risk of vascular disease: A cohort study of the general population.

Aims: Smoking is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but there is currently no clinically established biomarker for its cardiovascular damage. We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor ( AHRR ) methylation at CpG site cg05575921, a biomarker of smoking behavior, is associated with the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and aortic aneurysm (AA) in the general population.

Methods And Results: In this prospective cohort study of the general population, we measured AHRR methylation in individuals from three visits to the Copenhagen City Heart Study.

Subclinical effects of botulinum toxin A and microwave thermolysis for axillary hyperhidrosis: A descriptive study with line-field confocal optical coherence tomography and histology.

Botulinum toxin A (BTX) and microwave thermolysis (MWT) are standard axillary hyperhidrosis treatments, but comparison of their subclinical effects is lacking. Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is a promising non-invasive imaging tool for visualizing tissue-interactions. This study aimed to describe subclinical effects of BTX and MWT for axillary hyperhidrosis with LC-OCT-imaging compared to histology.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography in dermato-oncology: A literature review towards harmonized histopathology-integrated terminology.

Non-invasive diagnostics like line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) are being implemented in dermato-oncology. However, unification of terminology in LC-OCT is lacking. By reviewing the LC-OCT literature in the field of dermato-oncology, this study aimed to develop a unified terminological glossary integrated with traditional histopathology.

Conditionally replicative adenovirus as a therapy for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors.

Oncolytic adenoviruses (Ads) stand out as a promising strategy for the targeted infection and lysis of tumor cells, with well-established clinical utility across various malignancies. This study delves into the therapeutic potential of oncolytic Ads in the context of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-associated malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Specifically, we evaluate conditionally replicative adenoviruses (CRAds) driven by the cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) promoter, as selective agents against MPNSTs, demonstrating their preferential targeting of MPNST cells compared with non-malignant Schwann cell control.

Prognostic factors to predict postoperative survival in patients with recurrent glioblastoma.

Background: There are no generally accepted criteria for selecting patients with recurrent glioblastoma for surgery. This retrospective study in a Danish population-based cohort aimed to identify prognostic factors affecting postoperative survival after repeated surgery for recurrent glioblastoma and to test if the preoperative New Scale for Recurrent Glioblastoma Surgery (NSGS) developed by Park CK et al could assist in the selection of patients for repeat glioblastoma surgery.

Methods: Clinical data from 66 patients with recurrent glioblastoma and repeated surgery were analyzed.

As severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants continue to emerge, it is important to characterize immune responses against variants which can inform on protection efficacies following booster vaccination. In this study, neutralizing breadth and antigen-specific CD8 T cell responses were analyzed in both infection-naïve and infection-experienced individuals following administration of a booster bivalent Wuhan-Hu-1+BA.4/5 Comirnaty mRNA vaccine.

Implementation of CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 genotyping to guide antidepressant use in a large rural health system.

Purpose: We describe the implementation and ongoing maintenance of CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 focused pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing to guide antidepressant and antianxiety medication prescriptions in a large rural, nonprofit health system.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are common psychiatric conditions. Sanford Health implemented PGx testing for metabolism of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozymes 2C19 and 2D6 in 2014 to inform prescribing for multiple medications, including antidepressant and antianxiety therapies.

Neonatal Ultrasound and Radiographic Markers of Hip Dysplasia in Young Adults.

Objectives: To examine radiologic outcomes at skeletal maturity of sonographically normal, immature, mildly, and severely dysplastic newborn hips.

Methods: During 1988 to 1990, 11 925 newborns were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial examining screening strategies for developmental hip dysplasia. In total, 4469 were invited to clinical and radiologic follow-up 18 years later, of which 1735 had received neonatal ultrasound.

Prevalence and population characteristics associated with frailty in a rural low socioeconomic area in Denmark: the Lolland-Falster Health Study.

Background: Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome that predicts increased vulnerability to minor stressor events and adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, disability and death. The prevalence of frailty among individuals above the age of 65 varies widely with an overall weighted prevalence of 10.7%.

Public support for and concerns regarding pediatric dose optimization for seizures in emergency medical services: An exception from informed consent (EFIC) trial.

Background: Federal regulations allow exception from informed consent (EFIC) to study emergent conditions when obtaining prospective consent is not feasible. Little is known about public views on including children in EFIC studies. The Pediatric Dose Optimization for Seizures in EMS (PediDOSE) trial implements age-based, standardized midazolam dosing for pediatric seizures.

Genomic evidence for the suitability of Göttingen Minipigs with a rare seizure phenotype as a model for human epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a complex genetic disorder that affects about 2% of the global population. Although the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures can be reduced by a range of pharmacological interventions, there are no disease-modifying treatments for epilepsy. The development of new and more effective drugs is hindered by a lack of suitable animal models.

Planetary health education in the United States: four curricular models, one goal.

Global environmental crises demand scaled-up investment in education about planetary health. We identified college and university programs in the United States that focus on the human-animal-ecosystem nexus by systematically searching the 2023-2024 catalogs of more than 1000 schools. We identified four frequently-used curricular models: (1) One Health programs offered by universities with veterinary and agriculture schools that emphasize zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and wildlife conservation; (2) climate change and health (climate medicine) programs for graduate and professional students at large universities with medical and public health schools; (3) global environmental public health programs focused on pollution and other exposures; and (4) sustainability and health programs emphasizing food security, environmental justice, and other health issues that can be improved with ethical design and engineering.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography for in vivo visualization of morphological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma in a murine model.

Objectives: Non-invasive imaging with line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) can support the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) through visualization of morphological characteristics specific to skin cancer. We aimed to visualize prominent morphological characteristics of SCC using LC-OCT in a well-established murine SCC model.

Materials And Methods: Nine hairless mice were exposed to ultraviolet radiation three times weekly for 9 months to induce SCC development.
