Selective internal radiation therapy with SIR-Spheres in patients with nonresectable liver tumors.

Aim: Transarterial embolization of branches of the hepatic artery with biocompatible 90Y-labeled microspheres (SIR-Spheres) is a local treatment modality for patients with liver tumors, which, most recently, has become available in Europe. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of this selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT).

Methods: Twenty-three patients with nonresectable hepatic metastases or hepatocellular carcinoma nonresponding to polychemotherapy and/or other local treatment were treated with SIRT.

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi circulates in the blood as trypomastigotes and invades a variety of cells to multiply intracellularly as amastigotes. The acute phase leads to an immune response that restricts the proliferation of the parasite. However, parasites are able to persist in different tissues, which causes the pathology of Chagas' disease.

Neurite outgrowth is influenced by positive and negative signals that include the semaphorins, an important family of axonal outgrowth inhibitors. Here we report that the Rac GTPase activating protein (GAP)alpha2-chimaerin is involved in Semaphorin 3A (Sema 3A) signaling. In dorsal root ganglion neurons, Sema 3A-induced growth cone collapse was inhibited by alpha2-chimaerin mutated to eliminate GAP activity or interaction with phosphotyrosine.

Complement C3 is required for the progression of cutaneous lesions and neutrophil attraction in Leishmania major infection.

To elucidate the role of complement-mediated uptake in Leishmania major infection in vivo, transgenic BALB/c mice that express the cobra venom factor (CVF) under control of the alpha1-antitrypsin promoter were infected. CVF expression in these mice leads to a continuous activation and subsequent consumption of complement C3 in the serum. In contrast to susceptible non-transgenic BALB/c mice, CVF-transgenic mice are highly resistant to L.

First experience in human beings with a permanently implantable intrasac pressure transducer for monitoring endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Objectives: Endovascular stent graft repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) prevents rupture by excluding the aneurysm sac from systemic arterial pressure. Current surveillance protocols after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) follow secondary markers of sac pressurization, namely, endoleak and sac enlargement. We report the first clinical experience with the use of a permanently implantable, ultrasound-activated remote pressure transducer to measure intrasac pressure after EVAR.

A prospective study of diet and benign breast disease.

Much attention has been paid to the relation between diet and breast cancer risk. Because benign breast disease (BBD), particularly atypical hyperplasia (AH), is a marker of increased breast cancer risk, studies of diet and BBD may provide evidence about the effect of diet at an early stage in the process of breast carcinogenesis. We evaluated the relationship between fat, fiber, antioxidant and caffeine intake and incidence of non-proliferative BBD, proliferative BBD without atypia and AH in the Nurses' Health Study II.

CTLA-4 regulates the murine immune response to Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

Infection with Trypanosoma cruzi causes a profound suppression of T cell responsiveness to polyclonal or antigenic stimuli. In this study, we quantified expression of the negative T cell regulatory molecule CTLA-4 in T. cruzi infected mice and analysed its influence on the immune suppression.

Interobserver agreement of a probabilistic approach to reporting breast fine-needle aspirations on ThinPrep.

We have previously demonstrated the accuracy and reproducibility of a probabilistic/categorical approach for reporting breast fine-needle aspiration (FNA). However, the interobserver agreement in the application of this approach has not been assessed. Twenty breast FNA cases (each on one ThinPrep slide) were pulled from the cytology files of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Anaesthesia for a patient with Leigh's syndrome undergoing surgery for scoliosis.

Anaesthesia for patients with Leigh's syndrome has rarely been reported. Leigh's syndrome or subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy is a neurodegenerative disorder of infancy or childhood. Acute exacerbation with respiratory failure may accompany surgery and general anaesthesia.
