The classic Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotations Test (MRT) shows a male advantage for visuospatial rotation. However, MRTs that have been adapted for use with real or physical objects have found that sex differences are reduced or abolished. Previous work has also suggested that virtual 3D objects will eliminate sex differences, although this has not been demonstrated in a purely visuospatial paradigm without motor input.

The rise of powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) provides a compelling opportunity to investigate the consequences of anthropomorphism, particularly regarding how their exposure may influence the way individuals view themselves (self-perception) and other people (other-perception). Using a mind perception framework, we examined attributions of agency (the ability to do) and experience (the ability to feel). Defining and measuring self-discrepancies in mind perception between how an individual sees their actual self in comparison to their ideal or ought self has a long but challenging history in psychology. Here we present a new approach for measuring and operationalizing discrepancies of mind by employing the mind perception framework that has been applied successfully to a variety of other psychological constructs. Across two studies (N = 265, N = 205), participants were recruited online to fill in a modified version of the mind perception survey with questions pertaining to three domains (actual, ideal, ought) and two agents (self versus partner).

Sugar maple ( Marshall) is a temperate tree species in the northeastern parts of the United States and is economically important for its hardwood and syrup production. Sugar maple trees are highly vulnerable to changing climatic conditions, especially drought, so understanding the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses is critical. Diagnosis of tuberculosis in pediatric patients remains challenging due to inherent difficulties associated with obtaining respiratory samples for molecular and culture-based testing. Peatland restoration is seen as an effective contribution to help achieve the aims of the Paris Agreement because currently huge amounts of peatlands in Northern Central Europe are under unsustainable drainage-based land use. If net zero greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands shall be reached by 2050, restoration measures have to be done as soon as possible. However, rewetting drained peatlands that were under intensive grassland use frequently results in high methane (CH) emissions, which is often seen as a counter-argument against rewetting.

Sewer systems have been recently recognized as potentially important exposure pathways to consider during vapor intrusion assessments; however, this pathway has not been well-characterized and there is need for additional information about the occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in sewer systems. This paper reports the results of sewer gas sampling conducted in a sanitary sewer over the years of 2014-2017. Sewer gas samples were collected and analyzed using several different techniques, including TO-15 (grab), TO-17 (passive), Radiello® (passive) and a novel continuous monitoring technique, the Autonomous Rugged Optical Multigas Analyzer (AROMA).

Current recommendations for mechanical ventilation in the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) include the use of small tidal volumes (VT), even at the cost of respiratory acidosis. We evaluated the effects of this permissive hypercapnia on pulmonary gas exchange with the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET) in eight patients with ARDS. After making baseline measurements, we induced permissive hypercapnia by reducing VT from 10 +/- 2 ml/kg to 6 +/- 1 ml/kg (mean +/- SEM) at constant positive end-expiratory pressure.

A small surgical lesion of the parietal cortex induces an increase in the expression of several messenger RNAs varying from 172 to 980% in the entire homolateral cerebral cortex, as detected by quantitative in situ hybridization histochemistry. The messenger RNAs encoding the immediate early genes of the leucine zipper family (c-fos, c-jun, jun-B), the Zinc finger family (zif268), the glucocorticoid receptor family (NGFI-B) and the interferon family (PC4) are increased within 2 h after the lesion and return to normal levels at 6 h. The messenger RNAs encoding cholecystokinin, neuropeptide Y, somatostatin and the synthetizing enzyme of the neurotransmitter GABA, glutamate decarboxylase, are elevated within one day and return to normal levels after six days.
