Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) increase chronic disease risk. We estimated the impact on employee health and health care spending of banning SSB sales in California-based health care organizations. We used survey data from a large, multisite health care organization in California, sampling 2,276 employees three months before and twelve months after a workplace SSB sales ban was imposed.

In the last decade, the known biogeography of nitrogen fixation in the ocean has been expanded to colder and nitrogen-rich coastal environments. The symbiotic nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria group A (UCYN-A) has been revealed as one of the most abundant and widespread nitrogen-fixers, and includes several sublineages that live associated with genetically distinct but closely related prymnesiophyte hosts. The UCYN-A1 sublineage is associated with an open ocean picoplanktonic prymnesiophyte, whereas UCYN-A2 is associated with the coastal nanoplanktonic coccolithophore Braarudosphaera bigelowii, suggesting that different sublineages may be adapted to different environments.

Many nonurgent surgeries are delayed to preserve hospital resources, and patient visits to health care settings are limited to reduce exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Providers must carefully weigh risks and benefits of delivering immunosuppressive therapy during the pandemic.

Analysis of Breast Cancer Patients with T1-2 Tumors and 1-3 Positive Lymph Nodes Treated with or without Postmastectomy Radiation Therapy.

The use of postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) has been recommended for patients with 4 or more positive lymph nodes, however, its role in patients with 1-3 positive lymph nodes remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate oncological outcomes for breast cancer patients with T1-2 tumors and 1-3 positive lymph nodes after undergoing PMRT. We performed a single-institution retrospective investigation that evaluated the association between PMRT and outcomes in breast cancer patients with T1-2 tumors and 1-3 positive lymph nodes, who underwent mastectomy from 2004 to 2015.

Estrogen Receptor Positive and Progesterone Receptor Negative Breast Cancer: the Role of Hormone Therapy.

Background: A paucity of data exists regarding inherited mutations associated with phyllodes tumors (PT); however, some are reported (TP53, BRCA1, and RB1). A PT diagnosis does not meet NCCN criteria for testing, including within Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (TP53). We sought to determine the prevalence of mutations associated with PT.

Purpose: This study reports clinical experience using a linear accelerator-based MV-kV imaging system for intrafraction motion management during prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Methods And Materials: From June 2016 to August 2018, 193 prostate SBRT patients were treated using MV-kV motion management (median dose 40 Gy in 5 fractions). Patients had 3 fiducials implanted then simulated and treated with a full bladder and empty rectum.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene for multidrug resistance protein ABCG2, an erlotinib transporter, is a possible contributor to the interindividual variation observed in erlotinib pharmacokinetics and toxicity. Therefore, the aim was to study erlotinib efflux by ABCG2 wild-type (wt) and ABCG2 polymorphic variants in the K562 cell line. The chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cell line, neither expressing EGFR nor ABCG2, was transduced with vectors containing the ABCG2 wt, the SNPs: 34 G > A and 421 C > A, or with empty vector (K562/ve).

The passage and initial implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were imperiled by partisan divisions, court challenges, and the quagmire of federalism. In the aftermath of Republican efforts to repeal the ACA, however, the law not only carries on but also is changing the nature of political debate as its benefits are facilitating increased support for it, creating new constituents who rely on its benefits and share intense attachments to them, and lifting the confidence of Americans in both their individual competence to participate effectively in politics and that government will respond. Critics from the Left and the Right differ on their favored remedy, but both have failed to appreciate the qualitative shifts brought on by the ACA; this myopia results from viewing reform as a fixed endpoint instead of a process of evolution over time.

Metallocenyl 7-ACA Conjugates: Antibacterial Activity Studies and Atomic-Resolution X-ray Crystal Structure with CTX-M β-Lactamase.

The conjugation of organometallic groups to current β-lactam antibiotics is a field of increasing study due to the ability of certain organometallic groups to enhance the antibiotic potency of these drugs. Herein, we report the antibacterial properties of two metallocenyl (ferrocenyl and ruthenocenyl) 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) antibiotic conjugates. Continuing a trend we found in our previous studies, the ruthenocenyl conjugate showed greater antibacterial activity than its ferrocenyl counterpart.

Pitch pattern recognition is vital for both music comprehension and understanding the prosody of speech, which signals emotion and intent. Research in normal-hearing individuals shows that auditory-motor training, in which participants produce the auditory pattern they are learning, is more effective than passive auditory training.

This study documents the results of a longitudinal content analysis of television news about LGBT people in terms of visibility, active representation, tone and framing in Flanders (1986-2017). While attention for LGBT issues has increased over time, LGBTs are not more likely to be visually represented or granted a voice. Gay men are more often actively represented than lesbians and transgender people.

Device and method for nonlinear ultrasonic measurements on highly irradiated 304 stainless steel specimens in a hot cell environment.

This paper reports on the first successful nonlinear ultrasonic measurement on highly irradiated specimens in a hot cell environment. The specimens are ANSI 304 stainless steel specimens for which the microstructure characterization and ultrasonic velocity measurement have been previously conducted. The critical part of this research is the development of an automatic fixture device that can facilitate repeatable loading and unloading to place the contact ultrasonic transducers on and off of the specimen.

DNA-Based Delivery of Checkpoint Inhibitors in Muscle and Tumor Enables Long-Term Responses with Distinct Exposure.

Checkpoint-inhibiting antibodies elicit impressive clinical responses, but still face several issues. The current study evaluated whether DNA-based delivery can broaden the application of checkpoint inhibitors, specifically by pursuing cost-efficient in vivo production, facilitating combination therapies, and exploring administration routes that lower immune-related toxicity risks. We therefore optimized plasmid-encoded anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD-1 antibodies, and studied their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics when delivered alone and in combination via intramuscular or intratumoral electroporation in mice.

Objective: To comprehensively describe the tumor and clinical characteristics of breast cancer in a cohort of male patients and to assess the factors that affect survival.

Background: Much of the standard care of male breast cancer is based on the diagnosis and treatment strategies of female breast cancer. However, important clinical differences between the two have been elucidated, which suggests the need for unique attention to male breast cancer.

A phase I/II trial of 5-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery with 5-mm margins with concurrent temozolomide in newly diagnosed glioblastoma: primary outcomes.

Background: We sought to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of 5-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with 5-mm margins delivered with concurrent temozolomide in newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM).

Methods: We enrolled adult patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma to 5 days of SRS in a 3 + 3 design on 4 escalating dose levels: 25, 30, 35, and 40 Gy. Dose limiting toxicity (DLT) was defined as Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events grades 3-5 acute or late CNS toxicity, including adverse radiation effect (ARE), the imaging correlate of radiation necrosis.

Alzheimer-like amyloid and tau alterations associated with cognitive deficit in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Temporal lobe epilepsy represents a major cause of drug-resistant epilepsy. Cognitive impairment is a frequent comorbidity, but the mechanisms are not fully elucidated. We hypothesized that the cognitive impairment in drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy could be due to perturbations of amyloid and tau signalling pathways related to activation of stress kinases, similar to those observed in Alzheimer's disease.

California condor microbiomes: Bacterial variety and functional properties in captive-bred individuals.

Around the world, scavenging birds such as vultures and condors have been experiencing drastic population declines. Scavenging birds have a distinct digestive process to deal with higher amounts of bacteria in their primary diet of carcasses in varying levels of decay. These observations motivate us to present an analysis of captive and healthy California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) microbiomes to characterize a population raised together under similar conditions.

Temporal predictions provided by musical rhythm influence visual memory encoding.

Selective attention plays a key role in determining what aspects of our environment are encoded into long-term memory. Auditory rhythms with a regular beat provide temporal expectations that entrain attention and facilitate perception of visual stimuli aligned with the beat. The current study investigated whether entrainment to background auditory rhythms also facilitates higher-level cognitive functions such as episodic memory.
