Introduction: Parental refusal of intramuscular (IM) vitamin K in newborns poses challenges, particularly for pediatric urologists assessing the safety of neonatal circumcision. Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) is a known risk, with lack of prophylaxis increasing bleeding complications. This study evaluates the safety of neonatal circumcision without IM vitamin K, reviews guidelines, and explores alternative prophylaxis options.

Hemorrhage risk score and peripartum quantified blood loss.

Background: Risk assessment tools are used by clinicians to predict which patients might have excessive bleeding. We studied the association between a peripartum hemorrhage risk assessment score using peripartum quantified blood loss (QBL) among those with vaginal deliveries who are often at lower risk for peripartum hemorrhage.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis of 1221 patients with term vaginal deliveries at a public New York City hospital, the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWOHNN) risk assessment tool was used to categorize patients as low risk, medium risk, or high risk for postpartum hemorrhage.

Introduction: The clinical, research and advocacy communities for Rett syndrome are striving to achieve clinical trial readiness, including having fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments. This study aimed to (1) describe psychometric properties of clinical outcome assessment for Rett syndrome and (2) identify what is needed to ensure that fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments are available for clinical trials.

Methods: Clinical outcome assessments for the top 10 priority domains identified in the Voice of the Patient Report for Rett syndrome were compiled and available psychometric data were extracted.

Development of a psychometrically valid and reliable measure of primary care providers' willingness to engage with value based payments and innovations in care coordination.

Background: Most approaches to healthcare reform envision an enhanced role for primary care providers, supported by innovative payment methodology and improved resources. However, there are currently no instruments to measure providers' ability and willingness to work with existing tools provided by payers, such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACO). In this study, we develop and psychometrically test a new instrument to measure provider engagement with ACOs.

However, antiviral combinations may be more potent and lead to faster viral clearance, but the methods for screening antiviral combinations against respiratory viruses are not well established and labor-intensive. Here, we describe a time-efficient (72-96 h) and simple drug-sensitivity assay for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using standard 96-well plates.

Demographic data were obtained from the electronic health record.

Interlaboratory comparison of endotoxin contamination assessment of nanomaterials.

Endotoxin contamination is a significant hurdle to the translation of nanomaterials for biomedical applications. Multiple reports now describe that more than one-third of nanomaterials fail early pre-clinical assessment due to levels of endotoxin above regulatory requirements. Additionally, most immunological studies or studies testing nanomaterials in the literature lack inclusion of this assessment, which may lead to false-positive or false-negative results if high levels of the contaminant are present.

Predicting subjective ratings of affect and comprehensibility with text features: a reader response study of narrative poetry.

Literary reading is an interactive process between a reader and a text that depends on a balance between cognitive effort and emotional rewards. By studying both the crucial features of the text and of the subjective reader reception, a better understanding of this interactive process can be reached. In the present study, subjects (=31) read and rated a work of narrative fiction that was written in a poetic style, thereby offering the readers two pathways to cognitive rewards: Aesthetic appreciation and narrative immersion.

The collection, processing, and electrochemical analysis of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) from healthy human and animal subjects is reported on. EBC is a biospecimen potentially rich in biomarkers of respiratory disease. The EBC pH was analyzed potentiometrically using a disposable polyaniline (PANI)-modified inkjet-printed (IJP) carbon electrode.

Phenotyping Kidney Function in Young Adults With High Blood Pressure: The African-PREDICT Study.

Biomarkers of kidney function, including glomerular, tubular, and fibrotic markers, have been associated with blood pressure in elderly populations and individuals with kidney and cardiovascular diseases. However, limited information is available in young adults. In this study, we compared levels of several kidney function biomarkers between normotensive and hypertensive young adults and explored the associations of these biomarkers with blood pressure within these groups.
