The ghost of the great imitator: prognostic factors for poor outcome in syphilitic uveitis.

Background: Syphilitic uveitis is reemerging globally, may lead to any type of intraocular inflammation, and is potentially sight-threatening. We aim to characterize clinical features and prognostic factors in patients with syphilitic posterior uveitis.

Methods: Retrospective chart review at two tertiary university-based referral centers in Brazil.

Congenital toxoplasmosis: late pregnancy infections detected by neonatal screening and maternal serological testing at delivery.

The first aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of congenital toxoplasmosis in newborn infants treated by the public health system in Porto Alegre, a city in southern Brazil, using neonatal screening for Toxoplasma gondii-specific IgM. The second aim was to investigate whether the cases detected by this approach could have been identified by the prenatal screening for antibodies to T. gondii that was performed in the same population.

[Bilateral angle-closure glaucoma induced by trimetoprim and sulfamethoxazole combination: case report].

Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (cotrimoxazole) is an antibiotic combination widely used for infections treatment and prophylaxis. These and others sulfonamides have been implicated in a rare syndrome of choroidal effusion with transient myopia and angle-closure glaucoma. Previous cases reported in literature evolved to complete resolution after drug withdrawal.

[In vitro adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes to intraocular lenses].

Purpose: To quantify and compare the in vitro adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes to different intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Methods: Fourteen intraocular lenses were used in the experiment. Four of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), four of silicone, four of hydrogel and two of acrylic.
