Whereas regulatory T (Treg) cells play an important role in the prevention of autoimmunity, increasing evidence suggests that their down-regulatory properties negatively affect immune responses directed against tumors. Treg cells selectively express chemokine receptors CCR4 and CCR8, and specific migration occurs following the release of various chemokines. Neoplastic meningitis (NM) resulting from leptomeningeal spread of systemic non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) or carcinoma has a poor prognosis.

Effects of octreotide in acute hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis in rats.

Background And Aim: Octreotide is considered to reduce exocrine pancreatic secretion in acute hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis decreasing pancreatic autodigestion. The aim of this study was to determine whether octreotide also has antioxidative effects in acute pancreatitis. Additionally time and dose of application were of interest.

The gene polymorphism of the angiotensin I-converting enzyme correlates with tumor size and patient survival in colorectal cancer patients.

We studied the putative significance of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in colorectal cancer (CRC) biology. Local expression of ACE was investigated by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and by immunohistochemistry in CRCs and adenomas. ACE insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism was studied in 141 CRC patients and 189 controls.

Maggot debridement therapy in the palliative setting.

Success rates of Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) differ, but range from 70% to 80%. In this article it is argued that wound closure is not always feasible and is not always the aim of the treatment. A patient is described in whom the intent of MDT was not wound closure, but infection removal, reduction of odor, and eventually prevention of a below knee amputation.

Hepatitis C and ocular surface disease.

Purpose: To assess the frequency of changes in the ocular surface and the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in tear samples of patients with chronic HCV infection.

Design: Prospective, nonrandomized, clinical, interdisciplinary, single-center study.

Methods: Seventy-one patients with previously untreated chronic HCV infection and a control group consisting of 66 patients without systemic HCV infection were enrolled in the trial.

Creating hierarchical models of protein families based on Expressed Sequence Tags: the "Sprockets" analysis pipeline.

We have created an analysis pipeline called Sprockets, which can be used to classify proteins into various hierarchical "families", and build searchable models of these families. The construction of these families is based on data from Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) and Coding DNA Sequences (CDSs), making Sprockets clusters especially suitable for studying gene families in organisms for which the completely sequenced genome does not (yet) exist. The pipeline consists of two main parts: pair-wise analysis and grouping of sequences with Z-score statistics, followed by hierarchical splitting of clusters into alignable protein families.

Noninvasive monitoring of myocardial function after surgical and cytostatic therapy in a peritoneal metastasis rat model: assessment with tissue Doppler and non-Doppler 2D strain echocardiography.

Objective: We sought to evaluate the impact of different antineoplastic treatment methods on systolic and diastolic myocardial function, and the feasibility estimation of regional deformation parameters with non-Doppler 2D echocardiography in rats.

The tumor suppressive reagent taurolidine inhibits growth of malignant melanoma--a mouse model.

Background: The tumor suppressive agent taurolidine (TRD) inhibits tumor growth of more than 30 cell lines in vitro and reduces tumor load in early and advanced stages of neoplastic disease in animals. TRD has been shown to induce apoptosis of melanoma cells in vitro. Therefore, the effects of TRD on disseminated melanoma were evaluated in a mice model.

Yersinia enterocolitica infection of mice reveals clonal invasion and abscess formation.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a common cause of food-borne gastrointestinal disease leading to self-limiting diarrhea and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Occasionally, focal abscess formation in the livers and spleens of certain predisposed patients (those with iron overload states such as hemochromatosis) is observed. In the mouse oral infection model, yersiniae produce a similar disease involving the replication of yersiniae in the small intestine, the invasion of Peyer's patches, and dissemination to the liver and spleen.

Genome-wide association study identifies novel breast cancer susceptibility loci.

Breast cancer exhibits familial aggregation, consistent with variation in genetic susceptibility to the disease. Known susceptibility genes account for less than 25% of the familial risk of breast cancer, and the residual genetic variance is likely to be due to variants conferring more moderate risks. To identify further susceptibility alleles, we conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study in 4,398 breast cancer cases and 4,316 controls, followed by a third stage in which 30 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested for confirmation in 21,860 cases and 22,578 controls from 22 studies.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy in abnormal uterine bleeding: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: This study was conducted to assess the accuracy and feasibility of diagnostic hysteroscopy in the evaluation of intrauterine abnormalities in women with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Search Strategy: Electronic databases were searched from 1 January 1965 to 1 January 2006 without language selection. The medical subject heading (MeSH) and textwords for the following terms were used: hysteroscopy, diagnosis, histology, histopathology, hysterectomy, biopsy, sensitivity and specificity.

The detection of intrathecal antibody synthesis by qualitative methods or the Antibody-Index (AI) is a relevant tool for diagnosis of inflammatory neurological diseases. An increased AI can be observed for a causative antigen as well as part of a polyspecific immune response. The quantitation of the intrathecal antibody fraction in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), F(S), helps to discriminate both cases.

Retroperitoneal Castleman's tumor and paraneoplastic pemphigus: report of a case and review of the literature.

Background: Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative syndrome. Its etiology and pathogenesis are unclear. The disease can be occasionally associated with a paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), an autoimmune mucocutaneous disorder commonly seen in neoplasms of lymphocytic origin.

Prediction of BRCA1/2 mutation status in patients with ovarian cancer from a hospital-based cohort.

Purpose: To describe patient, tumor, and family histories of cancer in a hospital-based cohort of patients with ovarian cancer and to identify the predictive value of these characteristics for (non)carrying a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

Methods: Women diagnosed with invasive ovarian cancer between 1999 and 2003 in the west region of The Netherlands and unselected for age at diagnosis or cancer family history were included. Information was gathered on patient and tumor characteristics; p53; HER-2/neu, and KI-67 protein-expression; BRCA1/2 mutations; and family histories of cancer.

Maggot Debridement Therapy in Necrotizing Fasciitis Reduces the Number of Surgical Debridements.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially lethal bacterial infection of the fascial and subcutaneous tissues. Mortality rates of this condition remain high, ranging from 6%-76%. Bacterial cultures may show a wide variety of organisms, but Group A Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes) is the causative agent in up to 71% of all human cases.

Maintenance of internet-based prevention: a randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Excessive weight or shape concerns and dieting are among the most important and well-established risk factors for the development of symptoms of disordered eating or full-syndrome eating disorders. Prevention programs should therefore target these factors in order to reduce the likelihood of developing an eating disorder. The aims of this study were to determine the short-term and maintenance effects of an internet-based prevention program for eating disorders.

Development of a clinical decision tool for suspected scaphoid fractures.

Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal fractures; their overall incidence is however low. Missing a scaphoid fracture may lead to a non-union with a possible disastrous outcome for the patient; for this reason, treatment of a suspected scaphoid fracture, even without a proven fracture on the first radiograph, has been conservative with plaster treatment. There are many clinical tests developed to diagnose a scaphoid fracture.
