Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with oncogenic types is a prerequisite for cervical cancer development. HPV typing is required in the management of pre-cancerous lesions, epidemiological studies, and vaccination trials. None of the available HPV assays are satisfactory for routine diagnosis.
