This smooth flat experimental study investigates the capability of mako shark scales to control flow separation when placed downstream of the onset of turbulent boundary layer separation and within the reattachment region. The objective of the study is to validate the hypothesis that the shark scales' bristling and recoiling would prevent the flow separation on the flank region (the fastest flow region) of the shark. A rotating cylinder was used to induce an adverse pressure gradient over a flat plate to produce a region of separated flow where the shark skin specimen was mounted.

Identifying influential and outlying data is important as it would guide the effective collection of future data and the proper use of existing information. We develop a unified approach for outlier detection and influence analysis. Our proposed method is grounded in the intuitive value of information concepts and has a distinct advantage in interpretability and flexibility when compared to existing methods: it decomposes the data influence into the leverage effect (expected to be influential) and the outlying effect (surprisingly more influential than being expected); and it applies to all decision problems such as estimation, prediction, and hypothesis testing.

Examples of such key populations include sex workers, people who inject drugs, and men who have sex with men. While having accurate estimates for the size of these key populations is important, any attempt to directly contact or count members of these populations is difficult.

We suggest the use of a retrospective value of information framework in order to address such concerns. Value of information methods can be computationally difficult.

To better understand e-cigarette use in South Dakota, we examined the prevalence, access, reasons, and harm perception of e-cigarette among South Dakota youth.
Methods: We analyzed a representative sample of sixth to eighth grade students from the 2019 South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS).

Trabecular bone structure has been used to investigate the relationship between skeletal form and locomotor behavior on the premise that trabecular bone remodels in response to loading during an animal's lifetime. The aim of this study is to characterize human distal femoral trabecular bone structure in comparison to three non-human primate taxa and relate the patterns of trabecular structural variation in the distal femur to knee posture during habitual locomotor behavior. A whole-epiphysis approach was applied using microCT scans of the distal femora of extant Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Pongo pygmaeus, and Papio spp.
