Amylopectin (AP)-only (APBS), normal (NBS), and amylose (AM) only (AOBS) barley starches were selected here to investigate catalysis pattern of maltogenic α-amylase (MA) on hydrolyzing AP and AM granular starches. MA shortened starch side chains with degree of polymerization (DP) 11-30. MA-treated APBS exhibited porous granular structures and dramatically increased degree of branching (DB, 17-20 %), and reduced ordered degrees, suggesting high hydrolysis and transglycosylation activities of MA.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe analyzed the structural and material properties of small interfering RNA (siRNA)-loaded lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPNs) containing ionizable lipidoid and poly(dl-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using small-angle X-ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy, the Langmuir monolayer methodology, differential scanning calorimetry, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Scattering analyses showed that bulk lipidoid self-assemble into lamellar structures with a d-spacing of 38 Å, whereas lipidoid-siRNA lipoplexes display an in-plane lateral organization of siRNA in between lipidoid bilayers with a repeat distance of approximately 55 Å. The siRNA-loaded LPNs adopted a core-shell structure with an interaxial alignment of siRNA between lipidoid shell bilayers.

TGA treatment without MA pre-treatment had negligible effects on native starch, while TGA treatment with MA pre-treatment resulted in porous granules and increased permeability to enzymes. MA→TGA treatments lead to decreased molecular size of amylopectin molecules, increased α-1,6 branching, and increased amounts of amylopectin chains with the degree of polymerization (DP)<10 and decreased amounts of DP 10-28 after debranching.

Using dissipative particle dynamics simulations we give numerical evidence of the formation of "striped" (or AB alternating) diamond and gyroid network structures and other hierarchical morphologies in A(m)B(m)C(n) (2m+n)-miktoarm star terpolymers where the main variable is the ratio x=n/m with m,n being the number of equal length polymer arms of A and B and C, respectively. A number of topologically complex liquid crystalline mesostructures arise that can be related to the better-known bicontinuous mesophases of lyotropic amphiphilic systems. The simulations reveal 3D self-assemblies whose structural variations follow those expected assuming a simple steric molecular packing model as a function of star polyphile splay and relative volumes of each arm in the polyphile.
