Article Synopsis
  • E-cigarettes are marketed as a healthier option compared to traditional tobacco, but their health impacts, particularly on bone health, are still not fully understood.
  • The study investigated how various flavored e-liquids affect human bone-forming cells (osteoblasts), finding that all e-liquids reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, especially those flavored with cinnamon.
  • Results indicated that certain flavors, like coffee and fruit, can actually increase collagen production in osteoblasts, suggesting that flavored e-liquids could have unique effects on bone health independent of nicotine.

Human exposure to cadmium is linked to the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. We previously reported cadmium induces apoptosis and decreases alkaline phosphatase mRNA expression via extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) activation in Saos-2 bone-forming osteoblasts.
