Our lab created a Dual Task Screen (DTS) to evaluate athletes with SRCs, and we have established that it is a valid behavioral measure, as it consistently elicits poorer behavioral performance under dual, compared to single, task conditions. Here, we used a Neuroimaging-Compatible (NC) version of the DTS, named the NC-DTS, which uses portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess behavioral performance and neural recruitment during single and dual tasks.

While fNIRS has seen rapid advancements in hardware, software, and research applications since its emergence nearly 30 years ago, limitations still exist regarding all three areas, where existing practices contribute to greater bias within the neuroscience research community. Design: Participants were undergraduate students recruited from psychology courses in 2019 who reported medically confirmed sports-related concussion and medically advised return to play (N = 202).
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuroinflammatory disease resulting in axonal demyelination and an amalgamation of symptoms which commonly result in decreased quality of life due to mobility dysfunction and limited participation in meaningful activities.
New Method: The use of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, specifically transcranial magnetic and transcranial direct current stimulation, have been essential in understanding the pathophysiological decrements related to disease progression, particularly with regard to motor impairments. Although the research in this area has primarily focused on the upper extremities, new interest has arisen in understanding the neurophysiological underpinnings of lower limb impairment.
Dual task paradigms simultaneously assess motor and cognitive abilities, and they can detect subtle, residual impairments in athletes with recent mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, past dual task paradigms have focused solely on lower extremity skills and have relied on cumbersome, expensive laboratory equipment - thus limiting their practicality for everyday mTBI evaluation. The Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs was preliminarily examined for sensitivity to motor changes in a pilot cohort of adolescents aged 13-17 yrs with sports-related concussion. A total of 15 adolescents (5 female adolescents) with sports-related concussion were evaluated up to three times: within 2 wks of injury, approximately 1 mo later (mean, 35 days between visits), and for those not recovered at the second visit, again after clinical recovery (mean, 70 days between the first and last visits for all participants).
