The octadentate ligand forms complexes with Bi3+ and Pb2+. X-ray crystallography showed that the neutral ligand provides an eight-coordinate environment for both metal ions and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions have influenced the coordination environments of both complexes in the solid state.

Smaller antibodies such as single-chain variable fragments (scFv) preserve the selective and strong binding of their parent antibody to their antigen with the benefits of low immunogenicity, more efficient tissue penetration and easy introduction of functional residues suitable for site-specific conjugation. This is of high importance as nonspecific antibody modification often involves attachment to free cysteine or lysine amino acids which may reside in the active site, leading to reduced antigen binding.

Alzheimer's disease is associated with the formation of plaques in the brain primarily comprised of aggregates of a 42 amino acid protein called amyloid-β. With the goal of synthesising charge neutral, low molecular weight, lipophilic gallium complexes with the potential to cross the blood-brain barrier and bind to Aβ plaques we have used an ancillary tetradentate NO Schiff base ligand and the β-diketone curcumin as a bidentate ligand to give a six-coordinate Ga complex.
