Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) are filling the provider gaps in primary care. Primary care patients require referrals to different types of specialty providers that are not always readily available. The use of electronic consultations (e-consults) can fill this gap.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) activities have been shown to have psychological benefits. Studies have identified increased perceived levels of stress in graduate students; however, this is not specific to graduate nursing students. There is very little data on the use of MBSR as a nonpharmacologic tool to decrease stress levels in graduate nurse practitioner students.

One way to teach ECG interpretation in a flexible way is through e-learning modules. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the confidence and ability of ECG interpretation in FNP students who completed a series of e-learning modules.

One necessary skill is managing "on-call" clinical questions/concerns by patients across the life span. To date, there are no published studies that address "on-call" simulations for family NP (FNP) students across the life span.

Many people with implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are living at home and receiving nursing services through home health care agencies. Near the end of life, it is not unusual for patients to request comfort measures and care that promotes quality rather than quantity of life. The purpose of this pilot study was twofold: (1) to educate home health care nurses on care of patients with ICDs nearing the end of life and (2) to measure changes in nurse knowledge pre to post educational session.

The negative emotional responses are important for clinicians to identify. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of The Emotional Responses Post Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Scale among patients with ICD.

Family nurse practitioner (FNP) students must achieve basic competency in managing patients' primary care needs across the lifespan. Students in the FNP program have simulations integrated throughout their clinical theory courses to increase practice time with various patient cases. Students who received individualized faculty feedback immediately after self-evaluation of simulation performance showed statistically significantly increased knowledge (as evidenced by higher grades in course examinations and preceptor evaluations) than a control group of students who received feedback in a group class via a rubric grading guide 2-4 weeks after all students completed their individual simulations.

This advance in technology may improve physical health but can impose some challenges to patients, such as depression, anxiety, fear, and unpredictability.

Recently, a new body of knowledge has developed regarding the development and implementation of fair and effective peer evaluation programs resulting in formative and summative evaluations. The purpose of this article is to describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a peer review of teaching (PRoT) program for nursing faculty, initiated at one small comprehensive university in the northeastern United States.

Many patients who receive these devices experience progressive comorbid and cardiac conditions and may not want the additional survival provided by an ICD. Clinicians will need to counsel patients and families about advanced directives when their ICD is no longer beneficial, to prevent unnecessary suffering near the end of life.

Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is to describe the severity of and susceptibility for negative outcomes in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) who lack advanced directives.
Data Sources: A comprehensive review of literature was conducted with articles selected from CINAHL, Pubmed, Ovid, Medline, evidence-based medicine, evidence-based nursing, and the Web of Science from 1990 to the present. Key words such as ICD, randomized controlled trials, case studies, advanced directives, end-of-life, living will, health care proxy, and durable power of attorney were used to identify specific studies.
