Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology can start accumulating 20-30 years before cognitive symptoms occur, with increases in inflammation, amyloid-β (Aβ), and hyperphosphorylated Tau during this time. Previous studies have shown that the post-translational modification of a single N-acetylglucosamine moiety to serine or threonine residues to cytosolic or nuclear proteins, known as O-GlcNAcylation, can modify a plethora of cellular processes, including the processing of the amyloid precursor protein, competing with phosphorylation on tau, as well as having anti-inflammatory effects. This study is designed to evaluate how increasing O-GlcNAcylation is impacting AD pathology in the most comprehensive AD rat model to date, the TgF344-AD rat model.

Rhinovirus C (RV-C) infection can trigger asthma exacerbations in children and adults, and RV-C-induced wheezing illnesses in preschool children correlate with the development of childhood asthma. Surfactant protein A (SP-A) plays a critical role in regulating pulmonary innate immunity by binding to numerous respiratory pathogens. Mature SP-A consists of multiple isoforms that form the hetero-oligomers of SP-A1 and SP-A2, organized in 18-mers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how social environments impact individual behavior, particularly under competition, suggesting that higher population density leads to greater behavioral variation and predictability among animals.
  • - Using the eastern water dragon lizard, researchers found that while females were generally more sociable, there were no significant sex differences in behavioral variation or predictability.
  • - The results indicate that for females, predictable social behavior is linked to improved survival, while males show a connection between average social behavior and fitness, pointing to sex-dependent effects of social predictability.

The mammarenavirus matrix Z protein plays critical roles in virus assembly and cell egress. Meanwhile, heterotrimer complexes of a stable signal peptide (SSP) together with glycoprotein subunits GP1 and GP2, generated via co-and post-translational processing of the surface glycoprotein precursor GPC, form the spikes that decorate the virion surface and mediate virus cell entry via receptor-mediated endocytosis. The Z protein and the SSP undergo N-terminal myristoylation by host cell N-myristoyltransferases (NMT1 and NMT2), and G2A mutations that prevent myristoylation of Z or SSP have been shown to affect the Z-mediated virus budding and GP2-mediated fusion activity that is required to complete the virus cell entry process.
