Hemorrhage is a common postpartum complication which can also occur during abortion. Most cases can be managed with uterine evacuation and uterotonics, but some require additional procedures. We present cases of hemorrhage following dilation and evacuation, and delayed postpartum hemorrhage, where a Foley catheter was used for vacuum-induced hemorrhage control.

Background: Malaria-endemic countries are increasingly adopting data-driven risk stratification, often at district or higher regional levels, to guide their intervention strategies. The data typically comes from population-level surveys collected by rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), which unfortunately perform poorly in low transmission settings. Here, a high-resolution survey of Plasmodium falciparum prevalence rate (PfPR) was conducted in two Tanzanian districts using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), microscopy, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, enabling the comparison of fine-scale strata derived from these different diagnostic methods.

Background: Prior studies evaluating the relationship between psychopharmacotherapy (PPT), and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) have yielded inconsistent findings. Clarifying this potential relationship is important for effective counseling and risk stratification.

Objectives: Our primary objective was to evaluate the association between prenatal exposure to PPT (any drug class) and the occurrence of PPH requiring transfusion of packed red blood cells (PPH+pRBC) after systematically adjusting for known hemorrhage risk factors at the time of admission for delivery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to improve malaria detection by using mid-infrared spectroscopy combined with machine learning to accurately identify infections from dried blood spots without needing expensive reagents.
  • Plasmodium falciparum strains were mixed with blood from malaria-free individuals to create various blood samples with different levels of malaria and anaemia, which were analyzed using advanced machine learning classifiers.
  • The AI classifiers achieved over 90% accuracy in detecting low levels of malaria infections, surpassing traditional diagnostic methods like rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and microscopy.

Methyl carboxylate esters promote the formation of dimethyl ether (DME) from the dehydration of methanol in H-ZSM-5 zeolite. We employ a multilevel quantum method to explore the possible associative and dissociative mechanisms in the presence, and absence, of six methyl ester promoters. This hybrid method combines density functional theory, with dispersion corrections (DFT-D3), for the full periodic system, with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) for small clusters representing the reaction site, and coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple substitution (CCSD(T)) for the reacting molecules.

Unlabelled: "Pro-life" and "pro-choice" are closely associated with discussions about abortion; we refer to the extent that people identify with these terms as "abortion identity." Most polling measures present pro-life and pro-choice as mutually exclusive options, but there is a dearth of information about people who might simultaneously endorse both (or neither) labels.

Method: We administered a survey to adults in the United States (n = 580) that included two different formats for participants to select their abortion identity: a categorical item with response options ranging from strongly pro-choice to strongly pro-life (and "both" and "neither") and two separate items (sliders) that asked people the extent to which they identify with each term.

Research using psychophysiological methods holds great promise for refining clinical assessment, identifying risk factors, and informing treatment. Unfortunately, unique methodological features of existing approaches limit inclusive research participation and, consequently, generalizability. This brief overview and commentary provides a snapshot of the current state of representation in clinical psychophysiology, with a focus on the forms and consequences of ongoing exclusion of Black participants.

A late adolescent primigravida was found to have a fetus with a cystic hygroma and significant shortening of the limbs on first-trimester ultrasound. She underwent chorionic villus sampling with normal microarray result. In the early second trimester, the fetus was found to have the absence of all four limbs and a thorough skeletal dysplasia workup was pursued, identifying a variant in the FLNB gene (c.

We show that a sleep-regulating, Ig-domain protein (NKT) is secreted from mushroom body (MB) α'/β' neurons to act locally on other MB cell types. Pan-neuronal or broad MB expression of membrane-tethered NKT (tNkt) protein reduced sleep, like that of an NKT null mutant, suggesting blockade of a receptor mediating endogenous NKT action. In contrast, expression in neurons requiring NKT (the MB α'/β' cells), or non-MB sleep-regulating centers, did not reduce night sleep, indicating the presence of a local MB sleep-regulating circuit consisting of communicating neural subtypes.

Background: Despite advances in perinatal care in the USA, maternal mortality is on the rise, and maternal death is higher than in any other high-income country. Maternal mortality in the USA is a persistent public health concern. This issue disproportionately affects Black/African American women, with their likelihood of pregnancy-related death being three times more likely compared to White women.

Background: Donor human milk (DHM) though primarily administered in the NICU setting is increasingly being offered in well baby nurseries to promote exclusive breastfeeding. Despite the evidence supporting the use of DHM as a preferred supplement when mother's own milk (MOM) is unavailable or insufficient, foreign-born non-Hispanic black women are less likely to use DHM. Recognizing the cultural diversity and uniqueness among foreign-born non-Hispanic black communities in the USA, this exploratory study sought to understand perceptions of DHM and human milk banking (HMB) as well as factors influencing decision-making toward DHM among Ghanaian immigrant women living in the USA.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence during and after pregnancy is essential to reduce perinatal transmission of HIV. However, little is known about adherence during the intrapartum and early postpartum inpatient hospital stay. Using secondary data from a hospital-based cohort study focused on the relationship between birthweight and engagement in HIV care, we examined the magnitude of, reasons for, and factors associated with incomplete intrapartum and early postpartum ART adherence among adult women (18 years or older) living with HIV who delivered within the previous two weeks at one of five hospitals in Accra, Ghana.

Aim/hypothesis: Hyperglycaemia is associated with alpha cell dysfunction, leading to dysregulated glucagon secretion in type 1 and type 2 diabetes; however, the mechanisms involved are still elusive. The nutrient sensor mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays a major role in the maintenance of alpha cell mass and function. We studied the regulation of alpha cell mTORC1 by nutrients and its role in the development of hyperglucagonaemia in diabetes.
