Results of surgical treatment of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.

In 6 years, 74 neonates were treated for necrotizing enterocolitis, 40 (54 per cent) of whom underwent operation. The early postoperative mortality rate was 23 per cent and there was one late death. Of the 30 postoperative survivors, two have short bowel syndrome, two have chronic respiratory disease, two are partially sighted, and five (17 per cent) have severe developmental delay.

Rejection of murine skin grafts by hematopoietic chimeras that are fully compatible genetically with the skin-graft donor has been attributed to a disparity in skin-selective alloantigens between the irradiated host and the skin graft donor. Monoclonal antibodies recognizing Skna alloantigen were produced and used in indirect immunofluorescent and immunoperoxidase tests with sections of skin to demonstrate and confirm the expression of Skna alloantigen on epidermal cells of Skna genotype and absence of Skna alloantigen from epidermal cells of non-Skna genotype.

Denbufylline has been examined for its ability to inhibit cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase isoenzymes from rat cardiac ventricle and cerebrum, as well as for its affinity for adenosine A1 and A2 receptors and the re-uptake site. For comparison, SK&F 94120, theophylline and 3-isobutyl-1-methyl-xanthine (IBMX) were examined as phosphodiesterase inhibitors whilst N6-cyclohexyladenosine, R(-)-N6-(2-phenylisopropyl)-adenosine, 5'-N-ethylcarboxamido-adenosine, 2-nitrobenzylthioinosine, theophylline and IBMX were examined for their affinity for adenosine binding sites.

A lesson in intestinal atresias.

A girl with an atresia of the distal ileum and another in the sigmoid colon is reported, as are the inadequacies in her management. The association of an ileal atresia with a separate colonic atresia does not seem to have been previously reported.

Demonstration of Skn antigens on mouse epidermal cells by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry.

C57BL/6 (B6) mice that were lethally irradiated and reconstituted with (B6XA/J)F1 spleen cells were immunized against the skin-specific antigens, Skn, by grafting with A/J tail skin. Serum from these mice was shown to contain Skna-specific antibody by a flow cytometric assay using indirect immunofluorescence.

In vitro adherence of Moraxella bovis to intact corneal epithelium.

An in vitro assay is described using radiolabeled Moraxella bovis for studying adherence to intact bovine corneal epithelial surfaces. The assay was optimized for time (45 min) and for the ratio of epithelial cells to bacteria (1:1000) that demonstrated a significant difference in adherence between M. bovis strain 118F, a piliated organism and a nonpiliated variant, strain 118F/4-2.
