The global challenge of food waste necessitates innovative solutions, such as incorporating carrot pomace, a nutrient-rich by-product of carrot juice production, into beef patties to enhance their nutritional and functional properties. This study evaluated beef patties with carrot pomace added at 0%, 1.0%, 3.

This study addressed the critical issue of food waste, particularly focusing on carrot pomace, a by-product of carrot juice production, and its potential reutilization. Carrot pomace, characterized by high dietary fiber content, presents a sustainable opportunity to enhance the functional properties of food products. The effects of physical pretreatments-high shearing (HS), hydraulic pressing (HP), and their combination (HSHP)-alongside two drying methods (freeze-drying and dehydration) on the functional, chemical, and physical properties of carrot pomace were explored.

Cigarette smoke exposure is a well-known risk factor for developing numerous chronic health conditions, including pulmonary disease and cardiometabolic disorders. However, the cellular mechanisms mediating the toxicity of cigarette smoke in extrapulmonary tissues are still poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to characterize the acute dose-dependent toxicity of cigarette smoke on mitochondrial metabolism by determining the susceptibility and sensitivity of mitochondrial respiration from murine skeletal (gastrocnemius and soleus) and cardiac muscles, as well as the aorta to cigarette smoke concentrate (CSC).

Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggests that cigarette smoke exposure alters glucose and fatty acid metabolism, leading to greater susceptibility to metabolic disorders. However, the effects of cigarette smoke exposure on mitochondrial substrate oxidation in the skeletal muscle are still poorly understood. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the acute effects of cigarette smoke on mitochondrial respiratory capacity, sensitivity, and concurrent utilization of palmitoylcarnitine (PC), a long-chain fatty acid, and pyruvate, a product of glycolysis, in permeabilized gastrocnemius and soleus muscle fibers exposed to an acute (1 h) dose (4 %) of cigarette smoke concentrate.

This study was conducted to evaluate three different food products containing cricket powder for consumer acceptability, emotional response, satiety, and plate waste. US untrained consumers (n = 108), from the San Luis Obispo, CA area, were recruited to evaluate three food products (sausage, pasta, and brownies) as components in a three-course meal that either contain cricket powder (CP) or not (Control). The CP sausage was found to have lower liking scores than the Control for the attributes tested (p < 0.

Insect powders used in food products may lower the overall quality when compared to conventional counterparts. This preliminary study was used to develop and evaluate insect-based food products and to utilize them in a future consumer test. Pork sausage, dried pasta, and chocolate brownie formulations were developed to either contain NO cricket powder (Control) or have cricket powder (CP).

With thousands of discovered planets orbiting other stars and new missions that will explore our solar system, the search for life in the universe has entered a new era. However, a reference database to enable our search for life on the surface of icy exoplanets and exomoons by using records from Earth's icy biota is missing. Therefore, we developed a spectra catalogue of life in ice to facilitate the search for extraterrestrial signs of life.
