Three cases of swallowing disorders have been presented in the course of atrophic lateral sclerosis in two patients, and in the pseudobulbar in one. All patients have been operated on after Lindeman method. It consists in formation of the tracheoesophageal anastomosis--tracheoesophageal diversion.

Diagnostics, differentiation and results of treatment for spondylogenic dysphagia in 8 male patients aged 50-69 (mean 57.7 years) have been presented. Non-steroid and steroid pharmacotherapy was successful in 6 patients.

The authors present a retrospective study of 463 partial horizontal laryngectomy of various types (horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy and its modifications, supracricoid laryngectomy with CHP and CHEP, glottic laryngectomy) performed in the years 1970-1991 in the ENT Clinic of Pomeranian Medical Academy in Szczecin. The aspiration pneumonia in 46 (about 10%) patients was observed as a result of insufficient lower airway protection. In cases of extended supraglottic laryngectomy (including the removal of one arytenoid cartilage and/or one vocal cord) aspiration pneumonia appeared more often (16%) than after classic supraglottic laryngectomy (6%).

The surgical technic of horizontal glottic laryngectomy and the oncological and functional results in 12 cases treated in ENT Clinic of Pomeranien Medical Academy in Szczecin during the years 1985-1991 are presented. In all cases the changes concerned the vocal cords and were of following extend: T1b--5 cases and T2--7 cases. The survival rate was: 5-years--4/6 patients, 3-year--8/10 patients and 1-2-years--2/2 patients.

Two patients suffering from very rare granular cell tumor of the larynx were observed at the ENT Department of Medical School in Szczecin in the period 1986 to 1990. In one case the tumor located in the intra-arythenoid region was treated by tyreotomy. In the second case the tumor contained comisura anterior and cricothyreoidea region and was resected by subglottic laryngectomy.

The functional results in 61 patients after supracricoid reconstructive laryngectomy with CHP (28 cases) and CHEP (33 cases) performed in the University ENT Department in Szczecin between 1971-1989 are presented. Satisfactory lower airway protection in about 93% and respiration in the natural way in 83% are obtained. It was impossible to decaniulate 11 patients.

The authors provide brief clinical data and cytologic description of two extracranial meningiomas presenting as a cervical mass. Regardless of the rarity of the meningiomas in the neck region, using morphological criteria described in this article it is possible to diagnose preoperatively such a tumor by aspiration cytology.

The technique and results of surgical reconstruction of different extent of the extratemporal part of the facial nerve after oncological operations and after accidental injuries are reported. Return of facial nerve function was observed in 15 out of 17 cases (87%) with follow-up over 1 year. An own modification of nerve suture is described.

A method is presented for forming short, mucosa-lined vocal shunt in cases of supracricoid laryngectomy with preservation of one or two arytenoids, or the interarytenoid fold alone. On the basis of radiologic and particularly radiocinematographic examinationion of the anterior pharyngeal wall is of paramount importance. In cases of complete absence of leakage, said wall lies in the plane of the arytenoids or somewhat posteriorly.
