Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the progression of low-grade diffuse astrocytomas into grade 4 tumors and its impact on patient outcomes, highlighting the need for better understanding to enhance patient care.
  • Researchers analyzed genetic data from a cohort of patients with IDH-mutant astrocytomas, revealing significant alterations like increased chromosomal rearrangements and inactivation of key genes related to cell cycle regulation after treatment.
  • Results indicate that combined postoperative radiation and chemotherapy, especially temozolomide, may lead to improved survival outcomes, particularly in patients with grade 3 tumors, suggesting a need for more effective treatment strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the genomic heterogeneity of prostate cancer and its impact on treatment resistance, suggesting that incorporating evolutionary principles into clinical trials could provide valuable insights for therapy strategies.
  • - Researchers analyzed whole genome data and 3D anatomical structures from two patients with high-risk prostate cancer, using advanced tools to map tumor origins, genetic mutations, and metastasis patterns.
  • - Results indicate that specific mutations and evolutionary patterns significantly influence cancer progression and metastasis, highlighting the potential for evolutionary analysis to inform therapy choices in prostate cancer patients.

Oligodendrogliomas are typically associated with the most favorable prognosis among diffuse gliomas. However, many of the tumors progress, eventually leading to patient death. To characterize the changes associated with oligodendroglioma recurrence and progression, we analyzed two recurrent oligodendroglioma tumors upon diagnosis and after tumor relapse based on whole-genome and RNA sequencing.

Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic malignancies. Identification of new biomarkers is highly needed due to its late diagnosis and high recurrence rate. The objective of this study was to identify mechanisms of therapy resistance and potential biomarkers by analyzing mRNA and protein expression from samples derived from patients with platinum-sensitive and -resistant ovarian cancer (total cohort n = 53).

The behaviour of pharmaceuticals related to the human immunodeficiency virus treatment was studied in the liquid phase of source-separated urine during six-month storage at 20°C. Six months is the recommended time for hygienization and use of urine as fertilizer. Compounds were spiked in urine as concentrations calculated to appear in urine.

The objective was to demonstrate that a microbial whole cell biosensor, bioluminescent yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (BMAEREluc/ERα) can be applied to detect overall estrogenic activity from fresh and stored human urine. The use of source-separated urine in agriculture removes a human originated estrogen source from wastewater influents, subsequently enabling nutrient recycling. Estrogenic activity in urine should be diminished prior to urine usage in agriculture in order to prevent its migration to soil.

Our aim was to study the biomass growth of microalga Chlorella vulgaris using diluted human urine as a sole nutrient source. Batch cultivations (21 days) were conducted in five different urine dilutions (1:25-1:300), in 1:100-diluted urine as such and with added trace elements, and as a reference, in artificial growth medium. The highest biomass density was obtained in 1:100-diluted urine with and without additional trace elements (0.

We have sequenced the genome and identified the structural proteins and lipids of the novel membrane-containing, icosahedral virus P23-77 of Thermus thermophilus. P23-77 has an approximately 17-kb circular double-stranded DNA genome, which was annotated to contain 37 putative genes. Virions were subjected to dissociation analysis, and five protein species were shown to associate with the internal viral membrane, while three were constituents of the protein capsid.

Icosahedral dsDNA viruses isolated from hot springs and proposed to belong to the Tectiviridae family infect the gram-negative thermophilic Thermus thermophilus bacterium. Seven such viruses were obtained from the Promega Corporation collection. The structural protein patterns of three of these viruses, growing to a high titer, appeared very similar but not identical.

Bam35, a temperate double-stranded DNA bacteriophage with a 15-kb linear genome, infects gram-positive Bacillus thuringiensis cells. Bam35 morphology and genome organization resemble those of PRD1, a lytic phage infecting gram-negative bacteria. Bam35 and PRD1 have an outer protein coat surrounding a membrane that encloses the viral DNA.

The icosahedral membrane-containing double-stranded DNA bacteriophage PRD1 has a labile receptor binding spike complex at the vertices. This complex, which is analogous to that of adenovirus, is formed of the penton protein P31, the spike protein P5, and the receptor binding protein P2. Upon infection, the internal phage membrane transforms into a tubular structure that protrudes through a vertex and penetrates the cell envelope for DNA injection.
