The use of resistance exercises and of typical strength training methods have been progressively used to control body mass and to promote fat mass loss. The difficulties involved in the energy cost calculation during strength training are associated with the large amount of exercises and their several variations. Mean values between ≈3 and 30 kcal·min(-1) are typically reported but our studies indicate that it may attain values as high as 40 kcal·min(-1) in exercises which involve a large body mass.

Titanium is used due its excellent properties in medical and dentistry areas. With the objective of exploiting better mechanical properties, not altering its biocompatibility, it was intended to add niobium and zirconium to the titanium, being formulated two alloys Ti-35%Nb-5%Zr (alloy 1) and Ti-35%Nb-10%Zr (alloy 2) wt% produced by an arc melting method. The chemical analysis of the samples was accomplished by X-ray fluorescence, and the microstrutural evaluation by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare the effectiveness of flexor tendon tenolysis in zone 2 between two groups: one receiving intraoperative awakening with locoregional anesthesia and the other undergoing traditional general anesthesia.
  • A total of 22 patients with 39 affected fingers, who did not improve from rehabilitation, were assessed for active motion preoperatively and at 6 months post-surgery.
  • Results showed that while both methods yielded good outcomes, patients treated with the intraoperative awakening technique had significantly better total active motion after six months compared to those who underwent traditional anesthesia.

Background: Since the first experiments with fibrin glue application in microvascular anastomoses in 1977, several studies have reported its benefits on suture reduction and anastomosis decreased time. In spite of that, clinical experience has been limited to two neurosurgical and two replantation case series, all of them with good results. This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility and the potential benefits of fibrin glue application in free flaps.

Background: Several studies have already reported the utilization of fibrin glue in microvascular anastomoses to minimize the number of sutures and to decrease the operative time. Despite the good results obtained in most of these experiments, its clinical application has not launched. The aim of this study was to clarify the controversies around the safeness of fibrin glue application in microvascular anastomoses, and also to demonstrate the potential benefits of fibrin glue application in a realistic free flap model.

Background: Microvascular anastomosis is the most critical step during free flap transfers or replantations. Although the conventional suture is still considered the standard technique, it is technically difficult, time consuming, and traumatic to the vessel wall. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fibrin adhesive to overcome these problems when applied in microvascular anastomosis.

Cognitive deficits are common in association with heart failure (HF), and it is possible that their severity is magnified by the concomitant presence of major depressive disorder (MDD). Using the Cambridge Mental Disorders of the Elderly Examination battery, the authors compared the cognitive performance of MDD-HF subjects (N=20), nondepressed HF subjects (N=23), and healthy control subjects (N=18). Scores were lower in both HF groups relative to control subjects.
