There is renewed interest in bicruciate retaining (BCR) total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which preserves anatomy and more closely replicates native kinematics, theoretically allowing for improved functional results when compared to posterior stabilized (PS) TKA or cruciate retaining (CR) TKA. The purpose of this study is to report early clinical and radiographic results for a novel BCR TKA design.

Despite a large lattice mismatch, the thin films are single crystals and maintain high quality due the compliance of the interface which accommodates strain. This weak bonding interface is accomplished by the self-assembly of a pseudomorphic chalcogenide layer on the sapphire surface during growth.

Patellofemoral articulations have reportedly been optimized in newer TKAs. This study compared the incidence of PCC between a historical and modern TKA design.

To date, primary repair and allograft reconstructive options have produced suboptimal results. A synthetic mesh allograft reconstruction technique has recently been introduced with promising outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to report our 1-year experience with BPCI in our 2 arthroplasty surgeon private practice.
Methods: In this series, a historical baseline group is compared with our first year under BPCI.
We present a unique case of phlegmasia cerulea dolens and compartment syndrome secondary to external iliac vein disruption after revision total hip arthroplasty. To our knowledge, this complication has not yet been described following revision total hip arthroplasty. We conclude that although vascular complications are fortunately rare after hip arthroplasty, they can have significant morbidity and mortality.

Bicompartmental knee replacement (BKR) implants similarly promote native tissue preservation. We retrospectively reviewed 42 consecutive patients who underwent BKR from 2006 to 2007.

This work extends the contour boxplot technique to 3D and evaluates it against an enumeration-style visualization of the ensemble members and other conventional visualizations used by atlas builders. The authors demonstrate the efficacy of using the 3D contour boxplot ensemble visualization technique to analyze shape alignment and variability in atlas construction and analysis as a real-world application.

The objective of the study was to determine the characteristics of large fragment, partial articular radial head fractures and determine any significant correlation with specific injury patterns.
Materials And Methods: Patients sustaining a radial head fracture from 2002-2010 were screened for participation.
We develop a multivariate analysis of brain anatomy to identify the relevant shape deformation patterns and quantify the shape changes that explain corresponding variations in clinical neuropsychological measures. We use kernel Partial Least Squares (PLS) and formulate a regression model in the tangent space of the manifold of diffeomorphisms characterized by deformation momenta. The scalar deformation momenta completely encode the diffeomorphic changes in anatomical shape.

This article compares 2 frequently used methods (subcutaneous anterior transposition vs decompression and medial epicondylectomy) for their effectiveness in relieving both subjective and objective symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome. Between August 1991 and October 1993, nineteen patients underwent surgical decompression by a single surgeon for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the neuroanatomical variations observed in neurological disorders such as dementia. We do a global statistical analysis of brain anatomy and identify the relevant shape deformation patterns that explain corresponding variations in clinical neuropsychological measures. The motivation is to model the inherent relation between anatomical shape and clinical measures and evaluate its statistical significance.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new class of gold nanostructures has been fabricated on the (100), (111), and (110) surfaces of lattice-matched MgAl(2)O(4) substrates. The nanostructures were fabricated through a synthesis route where a thin gold film dewets, liquefies, and then slowly self-assembles. The supported nanostructures are intricately shaped, crystalline, and epitaxially aligned.

Increasing the thickness of the gold nanoshell from 15 to 26 nm is found to change the decay curve from being nonexponential and anisotropic to one that is fully exponential and isotropic (i.e.

Therefore, characterizing, in a probabilistic sense, the relationship between the variability of model selection and the variability of outcomes is important. Under certain assumptions, the stochastic collocation method offers a computationally feasible alternative to traditional Monte Carlo approaches for assessing the impact of model and parameter variability.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe studied the anisotropy of the influence of plasmonic fields, arising from the optical excitation of a gold nanoshell plasmon absorption at 770 nm, on the lifetime of the bandgap state of the CdTe core in vertically aligned CdTe-Au core-shell nanorods. The previously observed decrease in the lifetime was studied as a function of the tilt angle between the long axis of the nanorod and the electric field polarization direction of the plasmon inducing exciting light. It is observed that the strongest enhancement to the exciton relaxation rate occurs when the two axes are parallel to one another.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe intense electromagnetic fields of plasmonic nanoparticles, resulting from the excitation of their localized surface plasmon oscillations, are known to enhance radiative processes. Their effect on the nonradiative electronic processes, however, is not as well-documented. Here, we report on the enhancement of the nonradiative electronic relaxation rates in CdTe nanowires upon the addition of a thin gold nanoshell, especially at excitation energies overlapping with those of the surface plasmon oscillations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPreviously we have described the deposition of vertically aligned wurtzite CdTe nanowires derived from an unusual catalytically driven growth mode. This growth mode could only proceed when the surface of the substrate was corrupted with an alcohol layer, although the role of the corruption was not fully understood. Here, we present a study detailing the remarkable role that this substrate surface alteration plays in the development of CdTe nanowires; it dramatically improves the size uniformity and largely eliminates lateral growth.

YBa2Cu3O6+x thin films are investigated in the temperature range 10-300 K in magnetic fields up to 8 T and as a function of oxygen concentration. A dramatic increase of the Hall frequency is observed for underdoped samples, which is not consistent with the approach to a Mott transition but is consistent with a partial gapping of the Fermi surface as predicted in density wave models.

Here we present a new type of broadband measurement of microwave surface resistance that finally shows some of the spectral features expected for a d(x2-y2) pairing state. Cusp-shaped conductivity spectra, consistent with weak impurity scattering of nodal quasiparticles, were obtained in the 0.
