Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the optical conductivity and magnetotransport properties of top-gated devices made from the topological insulator BiSe, focusing on how different carrier types within the material interact.
  • Findings reveal that the topologically protected surfaces are somewhat shielded from gate control due to trivial band-bending states but still show significant mobility changes based on external gate bias.
  • The research highlights that the optical conductivity is largely influenced by the topological surface states and is particularly affected by scattering from trivial states, suggesting potential uses in future plasmonic device designs.

We demonstrate a technique to stabilize the emission from a 3.4-THz quantum-cascade laser against power drifts, using a recently developed photonic integrated circuit (PIC) structure formed by coupling a racetrack resonator with a ridge waveguide. This structure enables a dynamic power-control range of ±15% and locking over >600 s using a proportional-integral control loop.

Article Synopsis
  • Asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) is effectively used to measure terahertz (THz) bandwidth pulses in coplanar waveguides with integrated photoconductive switches for signal excitation and detection.
  • The ASOPS technique shows high performance, able to capture full THz time-domain traces at up to 100 Hz, with a dynamic range that peaks at 40 dB for short measurements and increases to 88 dB for longer durations.
  • This research paves the way for advancements in real-time video-rate imaging and THz sensing applications, demonstrating the capability of ASOPS to achieve sufficient dynamic range for future THz spectroscopy measurements.

We present measurements of the coherence times of excited states of hydrogen-like arsenic impurities in germanium (Ge:As) using a table-top two-dimensional time-domain spectroscopy (2D-TDS) system. We show that this laboratory system is capable of resolving the coherence lifetimes of atomic-like excited levels of impurity centers in semiconductors, such as those used in solid-state quantum information technologies, on a subpicosecond time scale. By fitting the coherent nonlinear response of the system with the known intracenter transition frequencies, we are able to monitor coherent population transfer and decay of the transitions from the 2p and 2p states for different low excitation pulse fields.

Study Objectives: To examine the associations between sleep duration, continuity, timing, and mortality using actigraphy among adults.

Methods: Data were from a cohort of 88 282 adults (40-69 years) in UK Biobank that wore a wrist-worn triaxial accelerometer for 7 days. Actigraphy data were processed to generate estimates of sleep duration and other sleep characteristics including wake after sleep onset (WASO), number of 5-minute awakenings, and midpoint for sleep onset/wake-up and the least active 5 hours (L5).

Article Synopsis
  • The research aimed to study the relationship between actigraphy-measured sleep characteristics and prostate cancer risk in a large cohort of men.
  • Over 7.6 years, the study found that while sleep duration and social jetlag did not significantly impact prostate cancer risk, increased wakefulness after sleep onset was linked to a higher risk of the disease.
  • The findings suggest that poor sleep quality, as indicated by wakefulness after sleep onset, may be an important factor in prostate cancer risk, warranting further investigation.

Variability in sleep duration and cardiovascular health have been infrequently investigated, particularly among reproductive-age women. We examined these associations across the menstrual cycle among a cohort of 250 healthy premenopausal women, aged 18-44 years. The BioCycle study (New York, 2005-2007) collected cardiovascular biomarkers (serum high- and low-density lipoprotein (HDL, LDL), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein (CRP)) at key time points along the menstrual cycle (follicular, ovulatory, and luteal phases).

Importance: Higher physical activity levels are associated with lower risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, but associations with many common and less severe health conditions are not known. These conditions impose large health care burdens and reduce quality of life.

Objectives: To investigate the association between accelerometer-measured physical activity and the subsequent risk of hospitalization for 25 common reasons for hospitalization and to estimate the proportion of these hospitalizations that might have been prevented if participants had higher levels of physical activity.

We evaluated relationships between preconception adiposity and human offspring sex and sex ratio. Using data from a prospective preconception cohort nested within a randomized controlled trial based at 4 US clinical sites (2006-2012), we used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for male:female sex ratio, and log-identity regression to estimate risk differences (RDs) and 95% CIs for male and female livebirth according to preconception adiposity measures. Inverse-probability weights accounted for potential selection bias.

Concerns about the possible health effects from exposure to weak electric and magnetic (EM) fields have been debated since the early 1960s. It is now well established that biological systems respond to exposure to weak EM fields at energy levels well below the current safety guidelines which result in modification of their functionality without significant changes in temperature. These observations are adding to the debate over what should be done to protect the users of cellular telecommunications systems.

Objective: Through the use of eye-tracking technology, this study explores the efficacy of current alcohol responsibility messages viewed by adolescents and proposes the development of new alcohol warning message design.

Method: An adolescent sample ( = 121; 72 males) was shown 14 advertisements (4 alcohol, 10 non-alcohol) in randomized order featuring messages modified by type size, type contrast, and message content (a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design).

Results: Results suggested that modifying message content to include direct language and a consequence enhances recall and attention to alcohol responsibility messages among adolescents.

The exploitation of ultrafast electron dynamics in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) holds enormous potential for intense, compact mode-locked terahertz (THz) sources, squeezed THz light, frequency mixers, and comb-based metrology systems. Yet the important sub-cycle dynamics have been notoriously difficult to access in operational THz QCLs. Here, we employ high-field THz pulses to perform the first ultrafast two-dimensional spectroscopy of a free-running THz QCL.

Earlier age at menopause is associated with increased long-term health risks. Moderate alcohol intake has been suggested to delay menopause onset, but it is unknown whether alcohol subtypes are associated with early menopause onset at age 45 years. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate risk of early natural menopause among 107,817 members of the Nurses' Health Study II who were followed from 1989 to 2011.

Article Synopsis
  • Evolutionary theory indicates that species may adjust the sex ratio of their offspring based on maternal health and environmental conditions, particularly influencing the likelihood of having sons under unfavorable scenarios.
  • Research shows that inflammation in mothers can affect the survival of male embryos, but the role of vitamin D in this context has been unclear.
  • A study of 1,228 women seeking pregnancy found that higher vitamin D levels are associated with a greater chance of having male infants, especially in women with high inflammation markers, suggesting vitamin D may help protect male embryos during pregnancy.

Study Question: Is cannabis use assessed via urinary metabolites and self-report during preconception associated with fecundability, live birth and pregnancy loss?

Summary Answer: Preconception cannabis use was associated with reduced fecundability among women with a history of pregnancy loss attempting pregnancy despite an increased frequency of intercourse.

What Is Known Already: Cannabis use continues to rise despite limited evidence of safety during critical windows of pregnancy establishment. While existing studies suggest that self-reported cannabis use is not associated with fecundability, self-report may not be reliable.

We report on the design, fabrication and characterisation of large-area photoconductive THz array structures, consisting of a thin LT-GaAs active region transferred to an insulating substrate using a wafer-scale bonding process. The electrically insulating, transparent substrate reduces the parasitic currents in the devices, allowing peak THz-fields as high as 120 kV cm to be generated over a bandwidth >5 THz. These results are achieved using lower pulse energies than demanded by conventional photoconductive arrays and other popular methods of generating high-field THz radiation.

The quantum cascade laser is a powerful solid-state source of terahertz-frequency radiation. However, integrating multiple photonic functions into a monolithic platform in this frequency range is non-trivial due to the scaling of photonic structures for the long terahertz wavelengths and the low frequency tuning coefficients of the quantum cascade lasers. Here, we have designed a simple terahertz-frequency photonic integrated circuit by coupling a racetrack resonator with a ridge laser in the longitudinal direction to design a notch filter.

Despite research indicating that sleep disorders influence reproductive health, the effects of sleep on reproductive hormone concentrations are poorly characterized. We prospectively followed 259 regularly menstruating women across one to two menstrual cycles (the BioCycle Study, 2005-2007), measuring fasting serum hormone concentrations up to eight times per cycle. Women provided information about daily sleep in diaries and chronotype and night/shift work on a baseline questionnaire.

Objective: The necessity for pre-injury baseline computerized neurocognitive assessments versus comparing post-concussion outcomes to manufacturer-provided normative data is unclear. Manufacturer-provided norms may not be equivalent to institution-specific norms, which poses risks for misclassifying the presence of impairment when comparing individual post-concussion performance to manufacturer-provided norms. The objective of this cohort study was to compare institutionally derived normative data to manufacturer-provided normative values provided by ImPACT® Applications, Incorporated.

Background: DNA methylation changes in peripheral blood have recently been identified in relation to lung cancer risk. Some of these changes have been suggested to mediate part of the effect of smoking on lung cancer. However, limitations with conventional mediation analyses mean that the causal nature of these methylation changes has yet to be fully elucidated.
