Emerging infectious diseases present a significant challenge to healthcare systems with their need for a rapid response and reallocation of resources. This paper explores the implementation of the Practical Approach to Care Kit (PACK) programme in Florianópolis, Brazil as a strategic tool for reinforcing primary healthcare (PHC) responses to emergent communicable diseases. With its focus on enhancing PHC delivery in resource-limited settings, PACK provides a flexible, evidence-based framework that integrates into local health systems.

Background: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes various forms of acute and chronic skin damage, including immunosuppression, inflammation, premature aging and photodamage. Furthermore, it induces the generation of reactive oxygen species, produces proinflammatory cytokines and melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) and increases tyrosinase activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential photoprotective effects of Rheum rhaponticum L.

Purpose: It has been reported that the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in tongue shows a more infiltrative profile, aggressive clinical course and poor prognosis, which may be related to a higher metastatic potencial. The aim of the present study was to assess the expression of β-catenin in OSCC of the tongue and its correlation with tumor metastasis.

Methods: Twenty four cases were selected and divided in two groups: metastatic group (n=12) and non-metastatic group (n=12).

Photoplethysmography and pulse oximetry are techniques based on optical principles, which are widely used in medical practice for non-invasive monitoring. There are some processes which may affect specific organs or parts without a significant repercussion on the information provided non-invasively. Here, we report on the preliminary results obtained by transmittance photoplethysmography in pig intra-peritoneal organs along a surgical intervention, using a measurement system based on two near-infrared laser diodes.

The most fundamental mass transport process in solids is self-diffusion. The motion of host-lattice ('self-') atoms in solids is mediated by point defects such as vacancies or interstitial atoms, whose formation and migration enthalpies determine the kinetics of this thermally activated process. Self-diffusion studies also contribute to the understanding of the diffusion of impurities, and a quantitative understanding of self- and foreign-atom diffusion in semiconductors is central to the development of advanced electronic devices.

Phagocytosis and intracellular killing of Candida albicans and Candida pseudotropicalis by neutrophils from 66 workers exposed to chlorinated compounds were studied. Phagocytosis with both antigens was normal in all the workers studied. However, lytic activity of the neutrophils in the presence of both antigens, C.

Eighteen patients with protal hypertension were studied. Portal hypertension was due to schistosomiasis (N = 9), cirrhosis (N = 7) and congenital hepatic fibrosis (N = 2) diagnosed by surgical biopsy during the decompressive surgery (selective splenorenal shunt). All the patients have had at least one episode of digestive hemorrhage due to rupture of esophageal varices and received blood transfusion before or during surgery.
