Scoping review of robotics technology in spinal surgery with highlights of the Annual Seattle Science Foundation Course.

Background: Robotic assistance has become increasingly prevalent in spinal surgery in recent years, emerging as a tool to increase accuracy and precision and lower complication rates and radiation exposure. The 7 and 8 Annual Seattle Science Foundation (SSF) Robotics Courses showcased presentations and demonstrations from some of the field's most experiences leaders on latest topics in robotics and spinal surgery, including cutting-edge preoperative planning technologies, augmented reality (AR) in the operating room, cervical fusion with transpedicular screws, and neuro-oncologic management. We provide a scoping review of the use of robotics technology in spinal surgery featuring highlights from the 7 and 8 Annual SSF Robotics Courses.

Developing a Risk Score for Predicting Multiple Revision Surgeries in Patients With Fracture-Related Infections.

Introduction: Postoperative infections are a leading cause of morbidity following fracture repair. The purpose of this study is to develop a risk score predicting fracture-related infection (FRI) that will require one versus multiple revision surgeries related to infection eradication and bone healing.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at a single level I trauma center from 2013 to 2020.

Prehospital Antibiotic Administration for Suspected Open Fractures: Joint COT/OTA/ACEP/NAEMSP/NAEMT Position Statement.

One of the primary concerns associated with open fractures is the development of a fracture-related infection (FRI). To minimize the risk of developing an FRI and subsequent morbidity, prophylactic antibiotics should be administered to patients with open fractures as soon as possible. While the antibiotic recommendations for severe open fractures are somewhat debatable, the use of a cephalosporin remains a mainstay of prophylactic treatment.

Background: Effective population size (N) is a pivotal parameter in population genetics as it can provide information on the rate of inbreeding and the contemporary status of genetic diversity in breeding populations. The population with smaller N can lead to faster inbreeding, with little potential for genetic gain making selections ineffective. The importance of N has become increasingly recognized in plant breeding, which can help breeders monitor and enhance the genetic variability or redesign their selection protocols.

The contribution of Na1.6 to the efficacy of voltage-gated sodium channel inhibitors in wild type and Na1.6 gain-of-function (GOF) mouse seizure control.

Background And Purpose: Inhibitors of voltage-gated sodium channels (Nas) are important anti-epileptic drugs, but the contribution of specific channel isoforms is unknown since available inhibitors are non-selective. We aimed to create novel, isoform selective inhibitors of Na channels as a means of informing the development of improved antiseizure drugs.

Experimental Approach: We created a series of compounds with diverse selectivity profiles enabling block of Na1.

The Effect of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Patients With Multiple Orthopaedic Injuries.

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) plays a vital role in providing life support for patients with reversible cardiac or respiratory failure. Given the high rate of complications and difficulties associated with caring for ECMO patients, the goal of this study was to compare outcomes of orthopaedic surgery in polytrauma patients who received ECMO with similar patients who have not. This will help elucidate the timing and type of fixation that should be considered in patients on ECMO.

A Look Into How the "Blue Zone" Lifestyle May Affect Patients' Lives Before and After Hip Fracture: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Study.

Introduction: Hip fractures are life-changing injuries with associated one-year mortality up to 30%. Five locations in the world have been termed "blue zones," where the longevity of the population is markedly higher than that of surrounding areas and there are 10 times more centenarians. The United States has one blue zone (Loma Linda, California), which is believed to be because of the lifestyle of the Seventh-day Adventist population living there.

Femoral shaft displacement and Winquist classification provide predictive characteristics for combined femoral neck and femoral shaft fractures.

Objectives: The goal of this study is to establish radiographic features and characteristics of patient injury in cases of femoral shaft fractures that predict the presence of ipsilateral femoral neck fractures (IFNFs).

Methods: Patient data was retrospectively assessed from a single level I trauma center through the electronic health record using (Current Procedural Terminology) CPT codes for both isolated and combined ipsilateral femoral shaft and neck fractures. Demographic information, injury characteristics, and independently reviewed radiographic features were collected and compared against the same information from a group of isolated femoral shaft fractures.

Radiological measurements of the feet of normal Straight Egyptian Arabian horses in Qatar.

The Arabian horse has been identified as carrying a risk locus for equine metabolic syndrome, predisposing this breed to development of laminitis. Radigraphy of the equine foot is widely considered the main diagnostic imaging technique for evaluation of the laminitic horse. Knowledge of 'normal' breed values allows assessment of the degree and severity of radiological changes associated with laminitis.

Urgent Spinal Surgery in a Lateral Decubitus on a Patient with a Left Ventricular Assist Device on Full Anticoagulation: A Case Report.

This case report aims to demonstrate the feasibility of performing spinal surgery in patients with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), who are traditionally considered unsuitable candidates due to the need for anticoagulation and the challenges associated with the prone position. A case of a patient with an LVAD undergoing microdiscectomy in the left lateral decubitus position is presented. The procedure was carried out by a specialized interdisciplinary team with appropriate monitoring.

Background Context: A previous cost-effectiveness analysis published in 2022 found that the Total Posterior Spine (TOPS) system was dominant over transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). This analysis required updating to reflect a more complete dataset and pricing considerations.

Purpose: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of TOPS system as compared with TLIF based on an updated and complete FDA investigational device exemption (IDE) data set.

High-energy Femoral Neck Fractures in Young Patients.

Femoral neck fractures in physiologically young patients typically occur from high-energy axial loading forces through the thigh with the hip in an abducted position. These fractures have a high rate of associated head, chest, abdominal, and musculoskeletal injuries. High-energy hip fractures differ from traditional geriatric hip fractures regarding incidence, mechanism, management algorithms, and complications.

One-stage surgical case management of a two-year-old Arabian horse affected by male-pseudo hermaphroditism.

A two-year-old Arabian horse presented for abnormal external genitalia and dangerous stallion-like behavior was diagnosed with disorder of sexual development (DSD), also known as intersex/hermaphroditism. Standing 1-stage surgical procedure performed under sedation, and local anesthesia to concurrently eliminate stallion-like behavior, risk of neoplastic transformation of intraabdominal gonads, and to replace ambiguous external genital with a functional, and cosmetically more acceptable anatomy. Step-1) Laparoscopic abdominal exploration and gonadectomy; Step-2) Rudimentary penis resection and perineal urethrostomy.

Expanding the genotype-phenotype spectrum in SCN8A-related disorders.

Background: SCN8A-related disorders are a group of variable conditions caused by pathogenic variations in SCN8A. Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) terms them as developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 13, benign familial infantile seizures 5 or cognitive impairment with or without cerebellar ataxia.

Methods: In this study, we describe clinical and genetic results on eight individuals from six families with SCN8A pathogenic variants identified via exome sequencing.

Pelvic Ring Injuries: Stable or Not?

Pelvic ring injuries occur in varying severity and in vastly different patient demographics. Knowledge regarding which of these injuries require surgical intervention and which can be managed nonsurgically continues to evolve. Previous studies have shown validated criteria for sacral fractures and the posterior ring, explored the role of examination under anesthesia, and other forms of dynamic imaging.
