Management of patients with carcinoma of the right colon invading the duodenum or pancreatic head.

Background: Only few case series have been published about locally advanced carcinoma of the right colon invading the duodenum or pancreas (CRCDP). We report results of a retrospective study about this rare entity focusing on management and prognosis.

Methods: We reviewed the complete data of patients operated for CRCDP between 1988 and 2005 in four French digestive-surgery departments.

Background: This study compared clinical and radiographic findings for the treatment of Class II furcation defects in human mandibular molars using anorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM)/cell-binding peptide (P-15) or open flap debridement (OFD).

Methods: Twelve subjects showing two comparable Class II furcation defects in their mandibular molars were enrolled. The defects in each subject were assigned randomly to the test (ABM/P-15) or the control (OFD) group.

Potential mechanism for Calvados-related oesophageal cancer.

The old Normandian habit of consumption of hot Calvados is associated with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer compared to other alcoholic beverages. The role of alcohol consumption in the risk of oesophageal cancer is well established. The first metabolite of alcohol, acetaldehyde is a potential local carcinogen in humans.

Gastric MALT lymphoma presenting as Waldenström's macroglobulinemia without bone marrow involvement.

We report a case of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with macroglobulinemia in a 59-year-old man who presented with melena. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed irregular thickening of the wall of the stomach, and endoscopic examination disclosed enlarged and inflammatory folds of the fundus. Histopathologic examination of gastric samples showed mucosal infiltration by small lymphocytes, which were positive for CD20 and negative for CD10 and CD23, confirming the diagnosis of gastric MALT lymphoma.

Predictors of adult attitudes toward corporal punishment of children.

This study identifies predictors of favorable attitudes toward spanking. Analyses were performed with survey data collected from a representative sample of 1,000 adults from Quebec, Canada. According to this survey, a majority of respondents endorsed spanking, despite their recognition of potential harm associated with corporal punishment (CP) of children.

Evolutionary modification of mouth position in deuterostomes.

In chordates, the oral ectoderm is positioned at the anterior neural boundary and is characterized by pituitary homeobox (Pitx) and overlapping Dlx and Six3 expressions. Recent studies have shown that the ectoderm molecular map is also conserved in hemichordates and echinoderms. However, the mouth develops in a more posterior position in these animals, in a domain characterized by Nkx2.

Comparison of the expression of medaka (Oryzias latipes) pitx genes with other vertebrates shows high conservation and a case of functional shuffling in the pituitary.

With the availability of an increasing number of whole genome sequences in chordates, exhaustive comparisons of multigene families become feasible. Relationships of orthology/paralogy can not only be inferred from sequence similarity but also by comparing synteny conservation on chromosomes. More accurate scenarios for gene and expression domain gain or loss can now be proposed.

Windows of the brain: towards a developmental biology of circumventricular and other neurohemal organs.

We review the anatomical and functional features of circumventricular organs in vertebrates and their homologous neurohemal organs in invertebrates. Focusing on cyclostomes (lamprey) and urochordates (ascidians), we discuss the evolutionary origin of these organs as a function of their cell type specification and morphogenesis.

Ol-insm1b, a SNAG family transcription factor involved in cell cycle arrest during medaka development.

Through whole-mount in situ hybridisation screen on medaka (Oryzias latipes) brain, Ol-insm1b, a member of the Insm1/Mlt1 subfamily of SNAG-domain containing genes, has been isolated. It is strongly expressed during neurogenesis and pancreas organogenesis, with a pattern that suggests a role in cell cycle exit. Here, we describe Ol-insm1b expression pattern throughout development and in adult brain, and we report on its functional characterisation.

Root coverage in isolated gingival recessions using autograft versus allograft: a pilot study.

Background: Different surgical techniques have been used to treat gingival recessions. This preliminary study compared clinical findings for the treatment of isolated gingival defects using a coronally positioned flap associated with a subepithelial connective tissue graft or an acellular dermal matrix graft.

Methods: Ten subjects with bilateral and comparable Miller Class I or II defects were selected.

Culture of Ciona intestinalis in closed systems.

Improvements in closed-system culturing methods for marine invertebrates are important prerequisites for the generalized use of transgenic lines. We discuss here the effects of several closed-system conditions on the growth and survival of the solitary ascidian, Ciona intestinalis. In Shimoda, close to the sea, a small-tank system was used to ensure that tanks and systems were reasonably equipped, water exchange was rapid, and animals separated to minimize the risk of infection.

The effect of attitude toward women on the relative individuation of women and men is mediated by perceived gender subgroups.

The present study investigated whether a differential number of perceived subgroups for men and women mediated the previous finding that men and women with more traditional attitudes concerning women's roles individuate men more than women, whereas individuals with less traditional attitudes better individuate women (Stewart, Vassar, Sanchez, & David, 2000). Participants were asked to recall traits of 2 male and 2 female targets described to them. Comparison of memory errors for male vs female targets indicated relative individuation of men and women.

Effect of tumor necrosis factor-alpha gene polymorphism on peri-implant bone loss following prosthetic reconstruction.

Purpose: The present study investigates the association between a specific polymorphism in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha gene, consisting of allele 2 of TNF-alpha-308, and peri-implant bone loss following prosthetic reconstruction.

Materials And Methods: This case-control study included 36 patients (20 women, 16 men; mean age 46 years) who had used implant-supported prostheses for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 31 months. The patients were nonsmoking, white Caucasian Brazilians, in good general health, and were not receiving medication.

Peri-implant bone loss around posterior mandible dental implants placed after distraction osteogenesis: preliminary findings.

Background: The present study evaluates implant survival and peri-implant bone loss around posterior mandible dental implants placed at sites of distraction osteogenesis.

Methods: On removal of the distraction devices, 34 dental implants were inserted into 14 posterior mandible sites in 10 healthy, non-smoking female patients. Prosthetic treatment was performed 4 months after implant placement using fixed implant prostheses.

Expanded expression of Sonic Hedgehog in Astyanax cavefish: multiple consequences on forebrain development and evolution.

Ventral midline Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signalling is crucial for growth and patterning of the embryonic forebrain. Here, we report how enhanced Shh midline signalling affects the evolution of telencephalic and diencephalic neuronal patterning in the blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus, a teleost fish closely related to zebrafish. A comparison between cave- and surface-dwelling forms of Astyanax shows that cavefish display larger Shh expression in all anterior midline domains throughout development.

The constant gene orf14.9, which belongs to the variable eps (exopolysaccharide) cluster, is involved in the cell growth of Streptococcus thermophilus.

In Streptococcus thermophilus, the eps clusters involved in exopolysaccharide (EPS) biosynthesis are very polymorphic, nevertheless they all contain a highly conserved sequence corresponding to that of orf14.9. This open reading frame (ORF) is transcribed in a reverse direction with respect to eps genes.

Modified coronally advanced flap associated with a subepithelial connective tissue graft for the treatment of adjacent multiple gingival recessions.

Background: The clinical choice of the appropriate surgical technique aiming at root coverage relies, among other factors, on the number of adjacent gingival recessions. This study aimed to clinically evaluate the effectiveness and the predictability of root coverage at adjacent multiple gingival recessions using a modified coronally positioned flap associated with the subepithelial connective tissue graft.

Summary The central nervous system (cerebral ganglion) of adult ascidians is linked to the neural gland complex (NGC), which consists of a dorsal tubercle, a ciliated duct and a neural gland. The function of the NGC has been the subject of much debate. The recent publication of the complete genomic sequence of Ciona intestinalis provides new opportunities to examine the presence and distribution of protein families in this basal chordate.

Viral gametocytic hypertrophy of Crassostrea gigas in France: from occasional records to disease emergence?

Viral gametocytic hypertrophy was reported for the first time in 2001 in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in France. Since this date, the number of reported cases and the distribution area have increased every year; however, the cases are not associated with macroscopic signs or increased mortality rates. Both male and female gametes were hypertrophied and basophilic inclusions were observed in gamete nuclei.

Precraniate origin of cranial motoneurons.

The craniate head is innervated by cranial sensory and motor neurons. Cranial sensory neurons stem from the neurogenic placodes and neural crest and are seen as evolutionary innovations crucial in fulfilling the feeding and respiratory needs of the craniate "new head." In contrast, cranial motoneurons that are located in the hindbrain and motorize the head have an unclear phylogenetic status.

Coronally positioned flap with subepithelial connective tissue graft for root coverage: various indications and flap designs.

Aesthetic concerns and functional abnormalities, such as dentin hypersensitivity, are often associated with gingival recession defects. Root coverage procedures aim to restore both gingival aesthetics and function in recession defects. The coronally positioned flap combined with the subepithelial connective tissue graft is one of the most widely used root coverage procedures.

[Prevalence and concurrent forms of violence against children in the Quebec population].

Objective: To date, the phenomenon of concurrent forms of violence against children has received little consideration from research. This study sought to determine the prevalence and cooccurrence of various forms of violence (physical, sexual and psychological).

Method: A telephone survey was conducted with a representative sample of 822 Quebec adults.

Medaka simplet (FAM53B) belongs to a family of novel vertebrate genes controlling cell proliferation.

The identification of genes that regulate proliferation is of great importance to developmental biology, regenerative medicine and cancer research. Using an in situ screen on a cortical structure of the medaka fish brain, we identified the simplet gene (smp), which is homologous to the human FAM53B gene. smp was expressed in actively proliferating cells of the CNS throughout embryogenesis.
