Background: Currently, it is acknowledged that vitamin E, insulin sensitizers and anti-diabetic drugs are used to manage non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), however, these therapeutic interventions harbour adverse side effects. Pioglitazone, an anti-diabetic drug, is currently the most effective therapy to manage NAFLD. The use of natural medicines is widely embraced due to the lack of evidence of their negative side effects.

Mosquito-borne viruses cause more than 400 million annual infections and place over half of the world's population at risk. Despite this importance, the mechanisms by which arboviruses infect the mosquito host and disseminate to tissues required for transmission are not well understood. Here, we provide evidence that mosquito immune cells, known as hemocytes, play an integral role in the dissemination of dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) in the mosquito .

Article Synopsis
  • Plants often have to choose between growing bigger and defending themselves against pests.
  • The Epichloë fungi help certain grasses grow without making them less resistant to bugs, which is a big deal.
  • In experiments, grasses with Epichloë could grow more without getting eaten up by aphids, while non-fungi grasses weren't as lucky and attracted more aphids when they grew.

A large public nursing data set was used to determine whether orientation and/or preceptor programs impact job satisfaction among registered nurses in Maine and Massachusetts. There was no association between orientation and preceptor programs and satisfaction, nor evidence that new nurse status modified the relationship. There is a need for evaluation of orientation and preceptor programs' structure and effectiveness, and innovation is needed in promoting job satisfaction, thereby increasing nurse retention.

SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to vastly divergent clinical outcomes ranging from asymptomatic infection to fatal disease. Co-morbidities, sex, age, host genetics and vaccine status are known to affect disease severity. Yet, how the inflammatory milieu of the lung at the time of SARS-CoV-2 exposure impacts the control of viral replication remains poorly understood.

The identification of sets of co-regulated genes that share a common function is a key question of modern genomics. Bayesian profile regression is a semi-supervised mixture modelling approach that makes use of a response to guide inference toward relevant clusterings. Previous applications of profile regression have considered univariate continuous, categorical, and count outcomes.

WWC2 (WW and C2 domain-containing protein) is implicated in several neurological disorders, however its function in the brain has yet to be determined. Here, we demonstrate that WWC2 interacts with inhibitory but not excitatory postsynaptic scaffolds, consistent with prior proteomic identification of WWC2 as a putative component of the inhibitory postsynaptic density. Using mice lacking WWC2 expression in excitatory forebrain neurons, we show that WWC2 suppresses GABA R incorporation into the plasma membrane and regulates HAP1 and GRIP1, which form a complex promoting GABA R recycling to the membrane.

Arboviruses can emerge rapidly and cause explosive epidemics of severe disease. Some of the most epidemiologically important arboviruses, including dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), Chikungunya (CHIKV) and yellow fever virus (YFV), are transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, most notably Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. After a mosquito blood feeds on an infected host, virus enters the midgut and infects the midgut epithelium.

species that cause respiratory infections in mammals include , which causes human whooping cough, and , which infects nearly all mammals. Both bacterial species produce filamentous hemagglutinin (FhaB) and adenylate cyclase toxin (ACT), prominent surface-associated and secreted virulence factors that contribute to persistence in the lower respiratory tract by inhibiting clearance by phagocytic cells. FhaB and ACT proteins interact with themselves, each other, and host cells.
